Chapter 3 - The Web of Poison

The night dragged on like a slow poison. Clara lay in bed, wrapped in Julian’s heavy cashmere sweater, the throbbing pain in her scalp kept at bay only by the mild painkillers Dr. Evans had carefully approved. Julian refused to sleep. He sat at the mahogany desk by the window, laptop illuminated, going through years of archived footage, financial records, and medical files.

Around 2:00 AM, a soft knock came at the suite's private balcony French doors.

Julian stood up immediately, drawing a concealed Glock 19 from his desk drawer. He parted the velvet curtains.

Mateo was standing outside on the terrace, drenched in rain, holding a manila folder enclosed in waterproof plastic.

Julian unlocked the door, letting the chill autumn wind slip into the warm room before latching it shut. "What did you find?"

Mateo shook the rain from his coat. "You were right, boss. It goes much deeper than Victoria just hating Clara’s background. It’s premeditated."

Mateo opened the folder, spreading several medical printouts across Julian’s desk.

"That’s from Dr. Sterling’s private obstetrician, Dr. Arthur Sterling—her second cousin," Mateo explained in a harsh whisper. "Clara was supposed to take prenatal vitamins prescribed exclusively by him. Victoria personally delivered the bottles to the kitchen staff every month."

Clara stirred in bed, hearing the hushed voices. She pushed herself up against the pillows. "What about my vitamins?"

Julian rushed to her side, his expression fraught with alarm. "Mateo intercepted the pharmacy batch Victoria had delivered yesterday afternoon for your eighth month."

Mateo stepped forward, holding up a small glass vial. "We sent a sample to an independent lab two hours ago for emergency toxicology. The capsules aren't standard prenatal multivitamins. They contain high concentrations of ergotamine and synthetic corticosteroids."

Clara felt the color drain completely from her face. Her hands flew to her belly. "What does that mean? What do those do?"

"Ergotamine induces intense uterine vasoconstriction," Mateo said bluntly. "In high doses during the third trimester, it causes placental abruption, fetal hypoxia, and premature labor. Meanwhile, corticosteroids mask the symptoms until it's too late."

Clara began to hyperventilate. "She was trying to kill my baby. She was trying to kill my little girl!"

"No," Julian snarled, his voice trembling with a terrifying blend of rage and grief. "She wasn't trying to kill the baby. If the baby died, the grandfather’s trust fund wouldn't trigger."

Clara looked at him, bewildered. "The trust fund?"

Julian closed his eyes, his breathing ragged. "My grandfather, Arthur Sterling Senior, despised my mother. He knew she was a narcissistic sociopath. When he wrote his will, he placed eighty percent of the Sterling family assets—nearly 1.4 billion dollars—into an irrevocable generation-skipping trust. The money bypasses my mother entirely."

Julian walked back to the desk, slamming his palm down against the wood.

"The trust dictates that the capital unlocks on two conditions: either I turn thirty-five, or I produce a legal Sterling heir. Once an heir is born, full operational control of the family estate and voting shares transfer to the child’s legal guardian until they reach adulthood."

Clara let out a ragged breath as the puzzle pieces snapped violently into place. "She wants the baby early... so she can claim I'm medically incompetent."

"Exactly," Mateo confirmed. "We found draft petitions prepared by Victoria’s legal team at Vance & Croft. They’ve already drafted emergency custody papers citing Clara’s 'severe postpartum psychosis,' 'inability to care for an infant,' and 'unstable psychiatric background.' If Clara had an emergency delivery and suffered a physical breakdown, Victoria was set to step in as primary legal guardian before Clara even woke up from anesthesia."

"She wasn't just abusing me," Clara whispered, a tear tracing the bruise on her cheek. "She was building a cage for my entire life."

Julian walked to the bedside, dropping to his knees. He took Clara’s cold hands and pressed them against his face. "Listen to me, Clara. You are never taking another pill from this house. You are never eating another meal prepared by her staff. And tomorrow night, Victoria Sterling's kingdom burns to the ground."

"Julian, she has judges in her pocket," Clara cried softly. "If she realizes we know, she’ll strike first. She’ll have me committed tonight!"

"She won't know," Julian said, his eyes burning with an unshakeable resolve. "Because tomorrow, you and I are going to play the obedient, broken children she thinks we are. You are going to wear the designer dress she bought for you. You are going to style your hair over that bandage. And we are going to walk into that ballroom together."

Clara stared into her husband's eyes. The golden-boy heir was gone. The compliant son who had spent years trying to maintain peace between his ruthless mother and his gentle wife had been extinguished.

In his place stood a man ready to wage total war.

"What do you need me to do?" Clara asked, her voice steadying.

May you like

Julian leaned in close, whispering the plan into her ear. As the rain battered against the high glass windows of the Sterling mansion, the stage was set for an execution.
