Chapter 15 - The Mirror in the Mail

The revelation struck like an artillery shell. Julian marched Evelyn down to the kitchen, binding her wrists with zip-ties to a heavy dining chair, while Clara feverishly packed formula, diapers, and emergency cash into two duffel bags.
"Who is funding him?" Julian interrogated, pacing the hardwood like a caged predator. "All Sterling trust accounts were frozen by the Southern District of New York. I personally oversaw the forensic audit!"
"Forensic audits only catch legal money, Julian," Evelyn spat, her initial terror morphing into bitter defiance. "The Sterling foundations owned shell holding companies in Panama, Cyprus, and the Isle of Man. Charles Vance has been managing those dark pools for twelve years. While Victoria was parading you through Ivy League galas and grooming you for the board, she was secretly funneling hundreds of millions into Charles’s hedge fund. She hated you, Julian! She hated you because every time she looked at your face, she saw the husband who betrayed her!"
"Shut up!" Julian shouted, slamming his fist onto the table.
"She used Clara," Evelyn continued, her voice rising in venomous triumph. "Victoria never cared that Clara was from a working-class background! She tortured her, humiliated her, tried to break her spirit—all to push you to the brink! She wanted you to rebel! She wanted you to take the bait and leak the mirror recording!"
Clara stopped packing. She turned slowly from the nursery doorway, her eyes fixing onto Evelyn with chilling intensity. "What did you just say?"
"Think about it, Clara," Evelyn mocked, a sick, hysterical laugh escaping her throat. "Victoria Sterling is a master chess player who built a multi-billion-dollar empire in a boardroom full of wolves. Do you really believe she didn't see the tiny camera lens embedded in the gilded frame of that antique mirror? Do you really believe she was careless enough to force you to swallow your own hair directly in front of an unobstructed four-K optical sensor?"
Clara’s blood ran ice cold. The world tilted sideways. The memory flashed before her: Victoria’s manic smile, the suffocating grip on her neck, the silver scissors... and the way Victoria had tilted her chin, making sure the light captured every tear, every drop of blood, every degraded gasp.

"She *wanted* to be arrested," Clara whispered, the horror dawning on her with unbearable weight. "She needed a public conviction."
"A federal conviction under the Racketeer Domestic Violence Act legally triggers the Sterling Family Incapacity Clause," Evelyn revealed, her eyes gleaming in the moonlight. "It invalidated your father’s original trust, which left everything to Julian. And under Clause Forty-Nine... the entire balance of the offshore estate instantly transfers to the eldest living grandson. Charles."
