Chapter 14 - The Secret Ledger of Evelyn Sterling

"You’re telling me you saw a ghost?" Julian asked three hours later, the fire crackling in the hearth, throwing jagged orange shadows across the study walls. Vance’s team had searched the cliffside with searchlights and dogs; they found not a single footprint, only wet rock washed clean by the torrential rain.
"I didn't see a ghost, Julian!" Clara snapped, her nerves raw, pacing behind the desk. "I saw a man. He was staring right at this room. And he looked like you. Not vaguely—he had your forehead, your jawline, the way your brow sets when you're angry!"
Julian rubbed his face with both hands. "My father, Robert Sterling, died in a private plane crash over the Atlantic twenty-two years ago. His remains were recovered, identified by dental records, and buried in the family crypt in Sleepy Hollow. I was at the funeral, Clara. I stood by the casket."
"Then who is funding Eleanor's private accounts?" Clara countered, pulling a thick stack of archival foundation files from the bottom drawer. "When you turned over Sterling Shipping’s assets to establish the foundation, your forensic accountants audited forty years of company books. Did anyone check the private trusts set up under the maiden name of Eleanor’s mother—Evelyn Sterling?"
Julian looked up, frowning. "The Evelyn trusts were closed in 1998."
"Were they?" Clara slapped a heavy leather-bound ledger onto the desk. "I spent two hours while Lucas was sleeping going through the digital backups we mirrored from the Sterling Manor server before the FBI seized it. Look at this."
Julian leaned forward, his eyes scanning the ledger columns. In 1999—one year after Robert Sterling’s supposed death—a dummy corporation titled *Blackwood Maritime Holdings* was registered in the Cayman Islands. Every quarter for the past twenty years, exactly $250,000 had been wired from Eleanor’s personal trust into Blackwood.
And the sole beneficiary listed on the charter was not Julian.
It was *Damian Sterling*.
Julian’s breath caught in his throat. "Damian? That’s impossible. My parents had only one child. Me. Eleanor reminded me of it every day—telling me I was the sole bearer of the Sterling bloodline, the only one who could carry the crown."
"Look at the birth records attached to the corporate founding documents," Clara whispered, her voice trembling with dread. "Damian Sterling. Born June 14, 1988. At St. Jude’s Private Hospital in Geneva, Switzerland."
Julian froze. His blood ran instantly cold.
June 14, 1988 was his own birthday.
"A twin," Julian murmured, the room spinning around him. The mahogany walls seemed to tilt, the sound of the rain outside swelling like the roar of a monstrous beast. "Eleanor had twins?"
"And she hid him," Clara said, leaning over him, her eyes wide with mounting horror. "Why would a billionaire family hide a twin son? Why send him away to Europe, fund him in secret through shell companies, and erase him from high society?"
"Because," Julian whispered, the memory hitting him like a physical blow to the solar plexus, "my mother didn't tolerate imperfections. When I was seven, I remember finding a medical chart in my father’s desk. It had the word *Psychopathy* circled in red ink next to a child's psychological evaluation. My father caught me reading it and burned it in the fireplace. He told me it was a mistake. A nightmare."

Julian looked at Clara, his eyes filled with a terror she had never seen in him before.
"Eleanor didn't just hire a hitman," Julian said, his voice barely audible above the storm. "She sent my brother."
