Chapter 8 - The Raid on Sterling Manor

While the media circus exploded outside the iron gates of Sterling Manor, a team of twenty state police forensic investigators in white protective suits tore the mansion apart piece by piece.

Detective Marcus Vance led the operation personally. Armed with a comprehensive search warrant signed by a federal judge, the team methodically searched every corner of Eleanor’s expansive private wing.

Julian accompanied the investigators, standing silently by the doorway of Eleanor’s opulent master bedroom. The room was decorated in pale cream silks and gilded Louis XIV antique furniture—an environment designed to radiate purity and supreme class, yet built entirely on lies.

"Detective!" a technician called out from inside Eleanor’s walk-in closet. "We found something hidden beneath the false bottom of the shoe vault."

Vance and Julian walked in immediately.

The technician carefully pulled out a heavy, fireproof lockbox. Vance picked the lock with specialized tools, popping the steel lid open.

Inside lay a treasure trove of damning evidence:

First was a collection of amber medical vials labeled with handwritten dosages. Beside them were several syringes and a medical-grade pill crusher coated in white residue.

"Scopolamine and liquid phenobarbital," Vance noted, bagging the vials into evidence. "Exactly matches the cocktail found in Mrs. Clara Sterling’s prenatal supplements."

Second was a leather ledger containing detailed, off-the-books cash payouts dating back five years.

Vance flipped through the pages, his eyes widening as he stopped at an entry dated October 12th—two weeks before Clara’s hit-and-run accident:

*‘Payment to T. Miller: $150,000 via Cayman Escrow. Task: Vehicle incapacitation / Route 7 intersection.’*

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. The horror of what his mother was truly capable of seemed to have no bottom. Route 7 was the exact mountain road where Clara’s sedan had been violently T-boned by a commercial flatbed truck, spinning her into the ravine and crushing her pelvis.

Eleanor hadn't just tried to induce a miscarriage through slow poisoning; she had actively hired a hitman to crush Clara’s car on an isolated mountain highway.

"T. Miller," Vance muttered, pulling out his radio. "Dispatch, this is Vance. Put an immediate federal APB out on Thomas Miller, commercial transport driver, last known address in Bridgeport. Charge is conspiracy to commit murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon."

"Copy that, Detective," the radio crackled back.

As the officers continued documenting the evidence, Julian’s phone rang. It was Dr. Reyes from St. Jude’s.

Julian answered immediately, his heart leaping into his throat. "Dr. Reyes? Is Clara okay? What’s happening?"

"Julian, you need to get to the delivery suite right now," Dr. Reyes said urgently, though her voice was calm and controlled. "Clara’s water just broke. The trauma from last night and the stress has initiated active labor. The baby is coming early, Julian. He’s coming today."

"I'm on my way," Julian said, his voice choked with adrenaline.

He turned to Detective Vance. "I have to go. My son is being born."

Vance looked at Julian and offered a rare, genuine smile. "Go, Mr. Sterling. We have everything we need here. Eleanor Sterling is never walking out of a state penitentiary again. You go welcome your son."

Julian didn't look back at the grand mansion. He sprinted out into the blinding winter sunlight, jumped into his SUV, and sped toward the hospital, leaving behind the dark shadow of the Sterling past forever.
