Chapter 7 - The Sterling Empire Crumbling

Victoria’s confident facade disintegrated in an instant. Her cheeks flushed a mortified crimson, and her voice stumbled over itself as she backed toward the far wall.
"Julian! Darling, thank God you're here!" Victoria stammered, attempting to paste on an expression of innocent concern. "I... I came to help! Your mother called my family in complete distress. She told us Clara was having a nervous breakdown and trying to destroy the family reputation! I brought over some documents to help Clara transition quietly without dragging the Sterling name through the press!"
Julian didn't say a word. He stepped into the room, his eyes scanning the floor. He bent down, picked up one of the scattered legal documents, and read the heading aloud:
*"FULL SURRENDER OF MATERNAL RIGHTS AND PERMANENT CONFINEMENT AUTHORIZATION."*
Julian’s fingers crumpled the heavy parchment into a tight ball. He slowly lifted his gaze back to Victoria. The absolute hatred in his eyes was so profound that Victoria visibly cringed, covering her mouth with her trembling, manicured hands.
"You brought custody surrender papers to my wife while she’s hooked to an IV after being beaten within an inch of her life?" Julian whispered.
"Julian, please! Eleanor told me—"
"Detective Vance," Julian said, never breaking eye contact with Victoria. "Is trespassing in a restricted medical wing and attempting to coerce an incapacitated patient into signing fraudulent legal documents a crime in the state of Connecticut?"
Detective Vance stepped forward, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "It certainly constitutes felony witness tampering, harassment, and conspiracy to obstruct justice, Mr. Sterling."
Victoria’s eyes bulged in pure panic. "What?! You can't arrest me! My father is Senator Vance! Do you have any idea who you're dealing with?!"
"Senator Vance can explain it to the state prosecutor at your arraignment," Detective Vance replied coldly, grabbing Victoria’s arm and spinning her around toward the door. "Move, Miss Vance. You're going to the same holding facility as Mrs. Sterling."
"Julian! Tell him! You can't let them do this to me!" Victoria screamed, her expensive heels dragging against the linoleum as the two officers hauled her out into the corridor. Her hysterical protests faded down the hallway until the heavy doors swung shut, leaving behind blessed, absolute silence.
Julian dropped the crumpled paper onto the floor. He turned toward Clara, and in an instant, the cold, terrifying titan vanished. His shoulders slumped, his chest heaved, and he rushed to the side of her bed, falling to his knees and burying his face into the soft blankets beside her hip.
"Clara... oh God, Clara..." Julian wept, his broad frame shaking with deep, silent sobs. "I am so sorry. I am so, so sorry. I should have protected you. I should have seen what she was doing. I almost lost you both."
Clara’s heart melted. She gently reached out, running her trembling fingers through his thick, snow-damp hair, cradling his face.
"Julian, look at me," Clara whispered softly.
Julian lifted his head, his golden-brown eyes red-rimmed and filled with agonizing guilt.
"You didn't do this," Clara said, her voice steady and full of profound warmth. "Eleanor did this. She is a sick, calculating woman who spent thirty years poisoning everything she touched. But she didn't break me, Julian. And she didn't break our son."
Julian took Clara’s battered hand and pressed it against his lips, kissing every single knuckle with reverent devotion. "I swear to you, Clara... on my life, on Lucas’s life... Eleanor will never see the light of day again. I will tear down the entire Sterling empire stone by stone if that's what it takes to keep you safe."
"Don't tear it down, Julian," Clara said softly, a faint, determined smile gracing her bruised lips. "Rebuild it. Rebuild it without her poison."
Julian swallowed hard, nodding slowly. A new resolve settled over him like an iron shield.
He stood up, pulled out his phone, and dialed a number.
"Who are you calling?" Clara asked.
"The board of directors," Julian replied, his voice shifting back into the decisive, razor-sharp commander. "And the press."
Within two hours, as the Christmas morning sun began to crest over the frozen Atlantic horizon, the Sterling dynasty underwent a seismic shift that sent shockwaves through Wall Street and high society across the globe.
Julian convened an emergency 6:00 AM video conference with the Sterling Enterprises Board of Trustees. Presenting the raw, unedited footage from the Christmas Eve surveillance camera, along with the toxicology reports and Detective Vance’s official felony complaint, Julian gave the board an ultimatum:
*Strip Eleanor Sterling of all voting shares, executive titles, and access to corporate trusts immediately, or watch Julian liquidate his sixty percent majority holding and bankrupt the conglomerate before noon.*
The vote was unanimous.
By 7:30 AM, a global press release was issued. Sterling Shipping Enterprises announced the immediate, dishonorable removal of Eleanor Sterling from all corporate and philanthropic positions. Simultaneously, Julian released a redacted statement confirming that criminal charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault, and domestic violence had been filed against Eleanor, fully cooperating with the District Attorney's office.
The illusion of Eleanor Sterling’s untouchable perfection was annihilated on national television. Her face—captured in an unflattering, makeup-smeared mugshot—was plastered across every major news network beneath headlines that screamed:
