Chapter 2 - The Red Eye of Judgment

Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs like a sledgehammer trying to break out of a cage. The metallic stench of copper and sweat filled his nostrils. When he pulled his hand away from Clara’s head, his palm came away slick with dark, wet blood.
"Clara, look at me! Look at me, baby!" Julian pleaded, his voice trembling with an agonizing mixture of terror and fury. His golden-brown eyes, usually so calm and authoritative, were wide with horror.
Clara could barely focus. Shock was rapidly taking over her system. Her skin was ashen, her lips turning a faint blue, and her teeth chattered uncontrollably. "My... my baby, Julian... she pulled... she hurt him..."
"He’s going to be okay. You’re going to be okay, I swear to God," Julian choked out, pulling off his heavy wool coat and wrapping it tightly around her shivering shoulders.
Suddenly, a sharp, manic voice cut through his panic.
"Julian! Get away from her this instant!" Eleanor demanded, storming forward. The triumphant look on her face had curdled into deep, indignant rage. "She threw herself out of that chair! She is staging this entire spectacle to tear us apart! She attacked me, Julian! Look at what she made me do!"
Julian turned his head slowly. The look in his eyes was something Eleanor had never seen in her thirty-two years of controlling her son: pure, unadulterated hatred.
"Shut your mouth," Julian growled, his voice dropping into a guttural, lethal whisper.
Eleanor recoiled for a split second, surprised by the venom in his tone, but her narcissism quickly overrode any sense of caution. She raised her manicured hand, stepping closer to strike Clara again or push Julian aside. "Don't you dare speak to your mother that way! I built you! I gave you everything! You owe your entire life to me, not this pathetic cripple!"
As she swung her hand toward Clara, Julian rose like a titan unleashed. He stepped into the blow, catching Eleanor’s wrist mid-air with an iron grip that instantly stopped her momentum.
"Don't touch her," Julian snarled, his grip tightening until Eleanor’s knuckles turned white. "If you take one more step toward my wife, I don't care that you gave birth to me—I will destroy you."
"Let go of me! How dare you lay hands on your mother!" Eleanor shrieked, struggling frantically against his grasp. With her free hand, she began slapping and clawing at his chest and shoulders. "You ungrateful brat! She’s a gold-digging parasite! Look at the tree, Julian! I put her where she belongs! In the trash!"
Julian held firm, absorbing the frantic, pathetic blows without flinching. His jaw was clenched so hard the muscles jumped beneath his skin. "You are completely insane."
"I am protecting this family!" Eleanor shrieked, spitting into the air between them. "And it’s your word against mine! Who will the board believe? Who will the police believe? A grieving, dedicated mother, or an unstable girl who can’t even keep her balance?!"
Eleanor sneered, believing she held all the cards. In the Sterling household, her word had been the absolute law for four decades. She had buried rivals, bribed politicians, and suppressed scandals with a flick of her checkbook. There were no witnesses. The servants were gone for the holiday.
Julian tightened his grip on her wrist, forcing her arm down. "You really think you're untouchable, Eleanor?"
"I am Eleanor Sterling!" she barked, chin raised high in haughty defiance. "In this house, what I say happened is the only truth that exists!"
At that exact moment, a faint, rhythmic sound echoed from high above the mantelpiece—a quiet, mechanical whir, followed by a soft, synchronized click.
Julian’s eyes flicked upward toward the towering Christmas tree.
Sitting nestled discreetly amidst the emerald boughs, right behind a cluster of golden glass baubles and just inches away from where Clara’s torn hair hung, was a small black cylinder.
And on its matte face, a tiny, ominous red light blinked in steady intervals.
*Blink.*
*Blink.*
*Blink.*
Eleanor froze, following Julian’s icy gaze. The color instantly drained from her heavily contoured face, leaving behind a pasty, sickly white.
"What... what is that?" Eleanor whispered, her voice losing its razor-sharp authority for the first time that evening.
Julian’s expression transformed from explosive rage into chilling, calculated ruthlessness. A cold, dark smile touched the corners of his lips.
"That," Julian said, his voice echoing in the vast, dead-silent salon, "is a high-definition 4K military-grade surveillance camera with a dedicated cloud-backup server."
Eleanor blinked, her breathing hitching in her throat. "What are you talking about? There are no cameras in the main living quarters! I explicitly forbade internal surveillance in my house!"
"It’s not your house anymore, Eleanor," Julian replied, never breaking eye contact. "My father left sixty percent of the estate’s physical deed to me before he died. And two weeks ago, after Clara’s 'unexplained' fall down the terrace stairs, I hired an independent private security firm to wire every single room in this mansion."
Eleanor’s chest heaved. Her eyes darted wildly toward the small red light. "You... you spied on me?"
"I protected my family," Julian hissed, letting go of her wrist with such disgust that she stumbled backward onto the Persian rug. "And that camera just recorded every single second of what you did. The assault. The hair. The tree. Your confession. It’s all streaming directly to an encrypted off-site server in Manhattan."
A terrifying wave of panic crashed over Eleanor Sterling. Her invincible fortress, built on generational wealth and untraceable cruelty, had just vanished beneath her feet.
On the floor, Clara gasped again, her hands gripping her stomach as a violent tremor shook her entire body. "Julian... the baby... please... something hurts... it hurts so bad!"
Julian dropped back to the floor beside Clara, all thoughts of his mother instantly vanishing. He scooped Clara into his arms, lifting her bridal-style against his chest, her head resting against his neck, warm blood staining his pristine white collar.
"Hang on, my love," Julian whispered urgently, kissing her tear-streaked forehead. "I've got you. I've got both of you."
He turned back toward Eleanor, who stood frozen in horror like a shattered marble statue.
"Pray she and my son survive the night, Eleanor," Julian said, his voice ringing with absolute finality. "Because if anything happens to them... God won't be able to save you from what I'm going to do."
May you like
With that, Julian kicked open the French doors, carrying his bleeding wife into the raging storm toward the waiting SUV.
