Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Socialite

The clock on the wall of Room 412 in St. Jude’s Hospital read 3:45 AM.

The storm outside had finally begun to quiet, leaving behind two feet of thick, suffocating snow. Inside the private VIP recovery suite, the only sound was the rhythmic, reassuring beep of the fetal heart monitor and the soft hiss of the oxygen concentrator.

Clara lay propped up in the adjustable hospital bed. Her head was wrapped in a thick white gauze turban, beneath which several stitches held the torn edges of her scalp together. Her pale face was bruised along the right cheekbone, and dark purple circles bruised the skin beneath her eyes.

Yet, despite the overwhelming physical agony that pulsed through her body with every heartbeat, Clara’s hand remained firmly glued to her rounded stomach. Beneath her palm, she felt the steady, gentle flutter of Lucas’s kicks.

*He’s alive,* she whispered to herself silently, tears leaking from the corners of her eyes and soaking into the sterile pillowcase. *My baby is still fighting.*

Suddenly, the heavy door to the recovery suite clicked open.

Clara turned her head slowly, expecting to see Julian or Dr. Reyes. But the person who stepped through the door was someone entirely different—someone whose presence made Clara’s stomach instantly twist into cold knots.

It was Victoria Vance.

Victoria, twenty-eight, was the daughter of one of the oldest railroad dynasties on the East Coast and Eleanor Sterling’s hand-picked choice for Julian’s wife before Clara had entered his life. Victoria was dressed in a pristine white fur coat, carrying a designer leather handbag, her blond hair styled to perfection despite the ungodly hour. She wore an expression of smug, condescending pity as she stepped into the dimly lit room.

"Well, well, Clara," Victoria purred, clicking the door shut behind her. "Look at what a mess you've made of everything."

Clara’s voice was hoarse, barely louder than a whisper. "What are you doing here, Victoria? Who let you in?"

Victoria smiled thinly, pulling off her leather gloves finger by finger. "Money opens doors, darling. Especially at a hospital where my family sits on the board of trustees. Eleanor managed to make one brief phone call to my father before the police took her in. She asked me to handle things."

Victoria walked to the foot of the bed, leaning against the polished footboard. Her blue eyes traveled slowly over Clara’s bandages, her bruised face, and her swollen belly with unmistakable revulsion.

"Eleanor is in jail," Clara said, her voice shaking with quiet anger. "She tore my hair from my head. She poisoned me. She tried to kill my child."

"Oh, please. Spare me the melodrama," Victoria scoffed, rolling her eyes with theatrical boredom. "Eleanor had a momentary lapse in temper because you pushed an old woman to the brink of insanity with your greed. You were never meant for this world, Clara. You’re a middle-class designer who caught Julian during a vulnerable moment after his father died."

Victoria opened her designer handbag and pulled out a thick manila folder, tossing it onto Clara’s lap.

"What is this?" Clara demanded, refusing to touch it.

"That," Victoria said smoothly, "is an absolute surrender of parental rights, an immediate uncontested divorce agreement, and a non-disclosure contract. If you sign it, a trust fund will be set up in your name in Zurich: ten million dollars tax-free. You will deliver the baby, surrender custody to Julian and the Sterling estate, and disappear to Europe. You will never see Julian or that child again."

Clara stared at the folder, then looked up into Victoria’s cold, triumphant face. Disbelief gave way to a surge of blistering, white-hot fury—a strength Clara didn't know she possessed.

"You're out of your mind," Clara breathed. "Both you and Eleanor are sick."

"Am I?" Victoria laughed softly, leaning in close, her manicured fingers gripping the steel bed rail. "Let me tell you what happens if you don't sign, Clara. Eleanor’s legal team has already prepared twenty different affidavits claiming you are suffering from severe postpartum psychosis and self-harm tendencies. They will paint you as an unstable, suicidal mother who attacked Eleanor in a fit of rage and pulled out her own hair to extort the family. You will be locked in an asylum, and I will be the one who steps in to raise Julian’s son as my own."

Victoria smiled—a venomous, predatory grin that mirrored Eleanor’s madness. "Julian will come back to me. He belongs to my world. Not yours."

Clara’s heart pounded against her ribs. The pain in her scalp, her pelvis, and her back seemed to vanish beneath an overwhelming wave of primal maternal rage. She looked at the manila folder on her lap, then looked at Victoria.

With lightning speed, Clara reached out, seized the folder, and hurled it directly into Victoria’s face.

The thick stack of legal papers exploded in the air, scattering across the floor like giant snowflakes. One of the sharp paper edges sliced across Victoria’s cheek, leaving a thin red scratch.

"Ouch! You filthy little animal!" Victoria shrieked, clutching her bleeding cheek in shock.

"Get out," Clara snarled. She sat up straight in the bed, her brown eyes blazing with an intensity so ferocious that Victoria instinctively stepped back. "You and Eleanor think you can buy everything. You think you can buy my son. But I would rather burn your entire world to the ground with my bare hands than let either of you lay a single finger on my baby!"

"You're making a fatal mistake, Clara—"

"I told you to get out!" Clara roared.

The heavy door was suddenly kicked open with tremendous violence, slamming against the drywall with a thunderous crack that shook the entire room.

Victoria jumped, letting out a terrified squeak.

Julian stood in the doorway. He was drenched in melted snow, his face pale, his jaw set in a line of pure, unadulterated fury. Behind him stood two armed hospital security guards and Detective Marcus Vance.

Julian’s eyes swept the room—the scattered legal documents on the floor, Victoria clutching her scratched cheek, and his battered wife sitting upright, breathing heavily, defending herself even from her hospital bed.

Julian’s gaze locked onto Victoria. The temperature in the room dropped ten degrees.

"Victoria," Julian said, his voice vibrating with such lethal quietness that the hairs on the back of Victoria’s neck stood up. "Explain to me why you are standing in my wife's room before I have these officers drag you out by your hair."
