Chapter 5 - Frame by Frame Truth

The heavy front doors of Sterling Manor were swarmed within minutes.

Flashing red and blue lights painted the snow-covered pillars in chaotic strokes of emergency crimson and sapphire. Four state police cruisers and an unmarked black sedan belonging to the Connecticut State Police Major Crimes Division idled in the circular driveway.

Detective Marcus Vance, a seasoned investigator with twenty years of experience dealing with the protected elite of New England, walked through the shattered mahogany entryway with his hand resting casually near his service weapon. Behind him, two uniformed officers held digital evidence kits and camcorders.

Julian met them at the foot of the grand staircase. He had washed the dried blood from his hands, but his dress shirt was still stained with dark, rust-colored patches—mute testimony to the horror that had unfolded hours earlier.

"Mr. Sterling," Detective Vance said, offering a curt nod. "We received your emergency dispatch call regarding an aggravated assault and attempted murder involving Clara Sterling."

"She’s in the ICU at St. Jude’s," Julian replied evenly, his voice steady, devoid of the frantic panic most men in his position would exhibit. "The assault happened in the salon. And the perpetrator is upstairs in the library, attempting to destroy financial and physical evidence."

Vance gestured to his officers, who immediately moved toward the stairs. "Secure the library. Detain Mrs. Eleanor Sterling. Do not let her touch anything."

"Yes, Detective," the officers replied, unholstering their tasers as they bounded up the steps.

Julian turned and led Vance into the grand salon. The Christmas tree still stood illuminated, casting a haunting, surreal glow across the room. Vance stopped dead in his tracks the moment his flashlight beam caught the Frasier fir.

The detective’s jaw clenched. "Jesus Christ."

There, tangled among the glass icicles and silver tinsel, hung Clara’s thick lock of hair, crusted with dark, dried blood. On the hardwood floor beneath it lay the overturned motorized wheelchair, its footrest dented from the violent impact.

"Don't touch the tree," Julian said calmly, stepping toward the mantle. He reached up into the branches and unclipped the compact 4K surveillance lens, disconnecting the fiber-optic patch cord. "The local drive has the primary video. But the master uncompressed footage was pushed to this tablet in real-time."

Julian handed Vance an encrypted iPad that was already displaying the security portal.

Vance slipped on a pair of black nitrile gloves, tapped the screen, and pressed play on the file labeled *LivingRoom_Dec24_2104EST.mp4*.

The footage was shockingly crisp. The ultra-high-definition lens captured every agonizing micro-detail in full, unsparing color.

On the screen, Detective Vance watched as Clara sat peacefully in her wheelchair, hands resting protectively on her seven-month belly. He watched Eleanor approach with the crystal tumbler of scotch. The audio was pristine—every insult, every venomous threat against Clara’s unborn child resonated with bone-chilling clarity.

Then came the violence.

Vance winced visibly as the footage showed Eleanor lunging forward, seizing Clara’s hair, and violently ripping her out of the motorized chair. The thud of Clara’s body hitting the floor made the detective’s fists clench. The camera captured Clara curling into a ball, weeping, shielding her stomach, while Eleanor stood over her like a demon, twisting the hair around her hands and wrenching upward with sickening force.

The audio captured the horrifying, wet sound of Clara’s scalp tearing, followed by Clara’s piercing, agonized scream.

And then, the footage revealed Eleanor’s manic, euphoric laughter. It showed her lifting the bloody hair like a victorious gladiator, marching to the tree, and throwing it into the branches while screaming: *"YOU DON'T BELONG IN THIS FAMILY!"*

Vance paused the video. His face was gray. In twenty years of policing domestic violence, gang disputes, and homicides, he had rarely witnessed an act of such cold, calculated, aristocratic savagery.

"That's first-degree aggravated assault causing severe bodily injury, domestic battery against a visibly pregnant victim, and reckless endangerment of an unborn child," Vance said, his voice hard as flint. "And that's just what’s on this tape."

"There’s more," Julian said coldly.

He swiped the screen, opening the secondary audio file he had recorded in the library forty minutes earlier. Eleanor’s frantic voice spilled out of the tablet’s speakers, clearly detailing her instructions to Arthur—her private attorney—to scrub the Cayman accounts and cover up the offshore payments to the truck driver who caused Clara’s accident in October.

Detective Vance looked up at Julian, his eyes wide with disbelief. "She tried to kill your wife three months ago?"

"She tried to induce a miscarriage," Julian corrected with lethal precision. "She has also been systematically poisoning Clara’s prenatal supplements with phenobarbital and scopolamine. Dr. Reyes at St. Jude’s has the blood toxicology chain-of-custody ready for your forensic team."

Before Vance could respond, loud shouts echoed down the grand staircase.

Two state troopers descended the stairs, flanking Eleanor Sterling. Her hands were cuffed behind her back in cold steel bracelets. Her emerald velvet dress was rumpled, her pristine hair falling across her face in wild, silver strands. She looked like a feral animal trapped in a snare.

"Get your filthy hands off me!" Eleanor shrieked, thrashing against the officers' grips. "Do you know who I am?! I built the hospital you take your sick children to! I fund the governor’s campaign! You will all lose your pensions for this!"

As they reached the bottom of the stairs, Eleanor locked eyes with Detective Vance. "Detective, thank God! Arrest my son! He broke into my private safe! He is attempting a corporate coup of Sterling Shipping!"

Vance didn't blink. He walked up to her, pulled his Miranda rights card from his pocket, and stared straight into her wild, venomous eyes.

"Eleanor Sterling, you are under arrest for aggravated assault, domestic battery against a vulnerable adult, attempted feticide, and conspiracy to commit attempted murder," Vance recited in a monotone, authoritative voice. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..."

"No! No! Julian, tell them!" Eleanor screamed, her voice cracking into a desperate, shrill shriek as the officers dragged her toward the shattered front doors. "Julian! I did it for you! I did it for the family!"

May you like

Julian stood motionless in the center of the grand salon, beneath the glittering lights of the Christmas tree. He didn't blink. He didn't speak. He simply watched as the heavy police cruisers swallowed the matriarch of the Sterling dynasty into the blizzard night.
