Chapter 9 - The Trial of Blood and Glass

Three days had passed since the nightmare of Christmas Eve.

In the maximum-security wing of York Correctional Institution, Eleanor Sterling sat in a small, windowless interrogation room. The emerald velvet dress was gone, replaced by a rough, oversized orange jumpsuit. Her silver hair was unwashed and stringy, her face pale, devoid of the expensive cosmetics that had concealed her age for decades.

Across the stainless-steel table sat Arthur Pendelton, her longtime personal attorney. Arthur’s hands trembled as he looked through the mountain of evidence filed by the State of Connecticut.

"Arthur, you have to get me bail!" Eleanor demanded, her voice rasping like sandpaper, her fingers drumming erratically on the metal table. "Look at this place! It’s filthy! The women here are animals! Call Judge Harrison! He owes our family favors!"

Arthur looked up, his face ashen, shaking his head slowly. "Judge Harrison recused himself an hour ago, Eleanor. No judge in this state will touch this case with a ten-foot pole."

"What are you talking about?!" Eleanor snarled, leaning across the table. "I have fifty million dollars in liquid collateral! Post the bond!"

"There is no bail, Eleanor," Arthur said bluntly, his voice cracking with exhaustion. "The charges were upgraded this morning. Thomas Miller—the truck driver from October—was arrested at the Canadian border. He took a plea deal within thirty minutes of interrogation. He gave up your text messages, your bank transfers, and the exact audio recordings of you instructing him to run Clara off the road."

Eleanor’s mouth opened, but no sound came out. Her serpent-like blue eyes widened in pure horror.

"And that's not all," Arthur continued, his voice dropping into a somber whisper. "The District Attorney has charged you with attempted murder, solicitation of murder, two counts of aggravated assault causing severe disfigurement, and multiple counts of corporate embezzlement. Julian turned over the master server footage. The whole world has seen the video of you ripping Clara’s hair out and throwing it onto the Christmas tree. There are protests outside the courthouse demanding you receive the maximum life sentence."

"Julian..." Eleanor gasped, clutching her chest as if she couldn't breathe. "Julian wouldn't do this to me. He's my son! He loves me!"

"Julian has legally changed his last name, Eleanor," Arthur said, delivering the final, fatal blow. "He filed petitions this morning to dissolve the Sterling Trust. He has officially renounced all hereditary claims to your estate. He doesn't want your name, your money, or your legacy. To him... you are dead."

Eleanor slumped back against the metal chair. The reality of her total, absolute ruin finally breached the narcissistic armor she had worn for sixty-two years.

She had sacrificed everything—her humanity, her morals, her family—to preserve a legacy of power and pedigree. And in the end, her cruelty had completely erased that legacy from the face of the earth.

She closed her eyes, and for the first time in her life, Eleanor Sterling wept—not out of remorse for the innocent woman she had tortured, but out of the agonizing realization that she was utterly, completely alone in the dark.
