Chapter 15 - The Poisoned Gala

The Boston Public Library was transformed into a cathedral of crystal, white lilies, and soft amber lighting. The inaugural fundraising gala for the Clara & Lucas Foundation had drawn five hundred of the East Coast’s most influential philanthropists, politicians, and socialites.

Clara stood in the grand mezzanine, dressed in an emerald-green satin gown with a high neckline that concealed the faint, faded scar on her collarbone where Eleanor’s diamond ring had torn her flesh months ago. Her dark hair was swept up in an elegant, modern twist, held not with family heirlooms, but with simple silver pins.

At her side, Julian was the picture of regal authority, greeting senators and ambassadors with a charming smile that masked the steel wire coiled inside his gut. Underneath his tuxedo jacket, he wore a concealed Kevlar vest; four plainclothes guards flanked their perimeter at all times.

"You look breathtaking," Julian whispered into her ear as they paused by the champagne tower. "Are you holding up?"

"I feel like a target in the center of a colosseum," Clara murmured, maintaining her flawless, gracious smile for the flashbulbs of the society photographers. "Lucas is safe with Vance at the hotel?"

"Under 24-hour lockdown. Vance has three armed men inside the suite and two outside the door. He’s completely secure."

At 9:00 PM, the chimes echoed through the ballroom, signaling the keynote address. Julian took Clara’s hand and led her to the podium beneath a massive projection screen displaying the foundation’s emblem—a mother and child cradled in silver wings.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian’s voice resonated through the state-of-the-art sound system, commanding instant silence from the glittering crowd. "A year ago, the name Sterling was synonymous with corporate avarice, hidden abuse, and the poisonous illusion that wealth places anyone above the law."

The crowd murmured with quiet respect. High society loved a redemption arc, especially when funded by billions of dollars in charitable donations.

"Tonight, Clara and I stand before you to prove that legacy is not what you inherit—it is what you build with the wreckage," Julian continued, turning to look at Clara with unmistakable devotion. "My wife showed me what true courage looks like. When darkness tried to consume our family, she turned on the light. And tonight, we dedicate this fifty-million-dollar endowment—"

Suddenly, the microphone emitted a deafening, high-pitched squeal of feedback.

The crystal chandeliers overhead flickered violently, then plunged the entire ballroom into pitch-black darkness.

Gasps and shrieks rippled through the hundreds of guests.

"Julian!" Clara gasped, reaching blindly in the dark. Julian’s arm clamped around her waist like a vice, shielding her body with his own.

"Security! Code Red!" Julian yelled into his lapel communicator.

Above them, the giant digital screen suddenly flickered to life. But it wasn't the foundation's logo.

It was a live video feed.

The camera was positioned high in the corner of a room Clara recognized with cold, sickening certainty: the presidential suite at the Ritz-Carlton, where Lucas was sleeping.
