Chapter 10 - Justice Under the Neon Rain

The autumn twilight was turning the sky a deep, bruised indigo when Ethan walked back through the doors of St. Jude Pediatric Center.
The hospital was quiet now. The chaos of the trauma ward had settled into the steady, peaceful rhythm of healing.
Ethan walked down the hallway to Room 312. The armed federal marshals stationed outside the door nodded respectfully, stepping aside to let him pass.
Ethan pushed the door open.
The room was bathed in the warm, golden glow of a bedside lamp. Lily was sitting up in the middle of the bed, wearing a clean, bright yellow pajama set covered in cartoon elephants. Her cheeks were rosy, her brown ringlets brushed and bouncing as she concentrated intensely on stacking plastic colored rings onto a yellow cone.
Sitting beside the bed in the armchair was an elderly pediatric nurse, reading a picture book aloud.
When the door clicked, Lily looked up.
Her large, hazel eyes—so strikingly identical to Clara’s—widened with pure, unadulterated joy.
"Daddy!" she squealed, dropping the green plastic ring.
Ethan felt a hot wave of tears rush to his eyes. He crossed the room in three strides, dropping to his knees beside the bed, wrapping his arms around her tiny, warm body. He buried his face in her neck, inhaling the sweet, innocent scent of baby shampoo and strawberry soap.
"Hey, baby girl," Ethan choked out, his voice cracking with emotion as he held her tightly against his chest, feeling the steady, strong, miraculous beating of her heart. "Daddy’s here. Daddy’s right here."
Lily wrapped her small arms around Ethan’s neck, her little hands patting the back of his head with comforting rhythm. "No more pool, Daddy. Go home?"
"No more pool, baby," Ethan whispered, pulling back just far enough to look into her beautiful, smiling face. "We’re going to a new home. Somewhere with a big garden, and a big puppy, and no balconies. Just green grass and sunshine."
Lily smiled, reaching down to her chest. Clutched firmly in her small fist was Clara’s silver heart-shaped locket.
She held it up, offering it to Ethan with an innocent, toothy grin. "Mama," she whispered proudly.
Ethan took the locket, pressing the cool, tarnished silver against his lips. For the first time in fourteen months, the metal didn't feel cold. It felt warm. It felt like a promise kept.
"Yes, baby," Ethan smiled through his tears, fastening the chain securely around Lily’s neck and tucking it safely beneath the collar of her pajamas. "Mama is always with us."
Ethan scooped Lily up into his arms, gathering her small body against his chest. She rested her head against his shoulder, letting out a soft, contented sigh, her thumb slipping into her mouth as her eyelids began to droop with peaceful exhaustion.
Ethan turned and walked out of the hospital room, stepping through the double doors and out into the crisp, clean evening air.

Above them, the rain had completely washed the sky clean, revealing a vast canopy of glittering stars. The shadows of Hillcrest Lane, the ghosts of the past, and the monsters who had stalked them were gone, swallowed by justice.
Ethan walked toward his car, carrying his entire world in his arms, stepping boldly into the light of a new dawn.
