Chapter 23 - A Voice from the Static

The tactical radio crackled with a burst of white noise. Ethan stared at the green phosphorus display. Whoever was giving the orders had already coordinated a secondary kill-team. The conspiracy didn’t end with Julian’s vault. The web reached far higher into the corridors of corporate power and political corruption than Ethan had ever imagined.

Lily shifted in his arms, her eyes wide, staring at the glowing monitors. "Daddy... mommy's song?"

Ethan froze. "What did you say, Lily?"

Lily pointed her tiny, bruised finger toward the console. Coming faintly from the speaker behind the tactical command channel was an eerie, looping melody. It was a music-box lullaby—the very same French lullaby Clara used to sing to Lily before she died.

Ethan’s heart hammered against his ribs. He lunged toward the radio console, adjusting the frequency dial, stripping away the encrypted scrambler. The melody sharpened, followed by a soft, trembling breath on the other end of the line.

Then came a voice.

It wasn't Julian. It wasn't Victoria.

It was a woman’s voice—hushed, frantic, and unmistakably cultured:

*"Ethan? If you’re hearing this at Devil’s Horn... Julian failed to secure the kill. But you have less than twenty minutes. The shadow board has dispatched Falcon-One from the offshore platform. They aren't coming to rescue you. They’re coming to incinerate the island."*

Ethan grabbed the microphone, clicking the transmit key. "Who the hell is this? How do you know my name? How do you know that song?"

A brief, suffocating pause stretched over the airwaves.

*"I am the one who tried to warn Clara,"* the voice answered, shaking with buried grief. *"I am Sarah Vance. Clara’s sister. The one Victoria told you committed suicide five years ago."*

Ethan felt the room tilt beneath his feet. Sarah Vance? Clara’s younger sister, a brilliant biochemist who had mysteriously vanished in Switzerland years before Clara’s marriage to Ethan?

"You're dead," Ethan rasped, his knuckles whitening on the handset. "Victoria showed me the death certificate."

*"Victoria forged everything, Ethan! She didn't just want you; she wanted the Vance Bio-Trust! Clara discovered that Victoria and Julian were using the trust's offshore laboratories to synthesize neurotoxins for black-budget private defense contractors. When Clara refused to sign over Lily’s custodial trust, Victoria orchestrated her 'accident' on the highway!"*

Sarah took a ragged breath over the static.

*"They pushed Lily off the balcony not just to kill her, Ethan. They needed her blood! Lily carries the genetic cipher Clara engineered into the family trust. Without Lily’s biometric signature, the two-billion-dollar accounts remain locked forever. That's why they poisoned her—to induce a medical coma where they could extract the bone marrow cipher without triggering the alert protocols!"*

The pieces of the horrifying nightmare clicked together with brutal clarity. The balcony fall. The poisoned chamomile tea. The microchip at Timberline. It wasn't about jealousy. It was a cold-blooded corporate execution for biological wealth.

*"Ethan, listen to me!"* Sarah’s voice broke through the speaker, frantic. *"A black-ops chopper just took off from the private cutter ten miles out. Get off the tower! Get into the sea caves beneath the south jetty! There is an old smuggler's—"*

*CRACK-BOOM!*

A deafening shockwave shattered the south-facing glass panes of the lighthouse cupola.

A twin-engine, matte-black stealth helicopter emerged from the storm clouds, its blinding searchlight pinning Ethan and Lily in a circle of searing white light.
