Chapter 25 - Fire in the Sky

*KA-BOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!*

A titanic wall of orange fire erupted into the night sky, consuming the oxygen in a hundred-foot radius. The fireball expanded with supersonic speed, slamming directly into the rotor blades of the hovering helicopter.

The immense heat caused the chopper’s twin turbines to suffer catastrophic compressor stalls. The tail rotor clipped the expanding pressure wave, spinning the aircraft completely out of control.

"Mayday! Mayday! Engine loss! We’re going down!" the pilot screamed over the open channel before the helicopter spiraled sideways, slicing through the iron roof of the lighthouse cupola with a horrific screech of tearing metal.

The aircraft cartwheeled off the cliff, crashing into the boiling surf below, detonating in an underwater mushroom cloud of burning aviation fuel and black water.

The shockwave knocked Ethan off the catwalk.

He plummeted toward the rocks, but his right hand shot out, catching the bottom rung of a rusted maintenance ladder hanging over the south sea cliff.

The strain nearly tore his dislocated shoulder from its socket. Ethan roared in agony, his teeth drawing blood from his lower lip. Beneath him, the black ocean raged, ready to swallow them whole.

Against his chest, Lily was sobbing, but her arms remained locked around his neck.

"I've got you..." Ethan gasped, his vision swimming with gray spots. "I've got you, Lily..."

With sheer, animalistic willpower, Ethan hauled himself rung by rung down the ladder, bypassing the pulverized foundation of the lighthouse.

At the base of the south cliff, half-hidden behind a curtain of weeping rock and kelp, was the entrance to the sea cave Sarah had spoken of. Inside the natural grotto, floating quietly on tied mooring lines, was an unmarked, high-speed coastal interceptor boat—a 35-foot carbon-fiber vessel fueled and ready for extraction.

Ethan dropped onto the wet deck of the boat, hitting his knees, his energy completely spent.

He collapsed onto the non-skid floor, rolling onto his back, Lily resting on his chest, her tiny heart beating like a frightened hummingbird against his ribs.

The boat’s dashboard suddenly flickered to life. The satellite communication screen mounted on the helm lit up.

Sarah’s voice came through the boat’s intercom, trembling with shock:

*"Ethan? Did you make it? The chopper’s transponder just flatlined!"*

Ethan crawled toward the helm, hauling himself up with the steering wheel. "We’re alive, Sarah. We’re on the boat."

A ragged sob of relief sounded from the speaker. *"Thank God. Ethan, set the throttle south-southeast toward Whidbey Island. Victoria doesn't know you survived the bunker. She thinks you’re dead. She's moving her final play right now."*

Ethan turned the ignition key. The twin marine diesel engines roared to life with a deep, predatory rumble.

"Where is she, Sarah?" Ethan asked, his voice cold, devoid of humanity, filled only with the promise of absolute retribution.

*"The Vance Tower in downtown Seattle,"* Sarah replied. *"Tonight is the Annual Bio-Trust Gala. Victoria is announcing the complete acquisition of Clara’s estate and your declared legal deaths. In two hours, she legally signs away Clara’s life’s work to the syndicate."*

Ethan shoved the twin throttles forward. The interceptor surged out of the sea cave, slicing through the towering ocean swells at fifty knots, heading straight for the glowing skyline of the mainland.

"Tell her to enjoy the party," Ethan whispered into the microphone. "Because I'm bringing her daughter home."
