Chapter 20 - The Screaming Depths

The alarm klaxons wailed—a deafening, shrieking siren that turned the concrete vault into a chamber of madness.
The digital timer on the titanium safe instantly skipped from fourteen minutes to *00:00:30*.
*Thirty seconds.*
"Julian, you psychotic bastard!" Ethan roared, slamming the butt of his pistol into Julian’s jaw, knocking him to the floor.
The safe’s thermal vent began to hiss with white-hot intensity. Inside the viewing port, the magnesium fuse was already sparking, preparing to dump five thousand degrees of liquid fire over the contents of the safe.
Ethan didn't think about his life. He didn't think about the law. He looked at Lily, whose breathing had slowed to a ragged, dying rattle on the stretcher.
"Medic! Stand clear!" Ethan screamed.
He didn't try to guess the six-digit code. He stepped up to the titanium door, shoved the barrel of his Glock directly into the safe's hardened mechanical solenoid lockbox on the left seam—the flaw Clara had documented in the private schematics on the microchip—and emptied the entire fifteen-round magazine on full rapid-fire.
*BANG-BANG-BANG-BANG-BANG!*
Sparks erupted. Lead shattered against reinforced steel. The mechanical release latch, deformed by the point-blank kinetic trauma, sheared through its housing. With a savage roar of adrenaline, Ethan jammed his bare fingers into the warped seam and wrenched the thermal door open with his bare hands, tearing the skin off his palms.
Inside, resting in an insulated cryo-tube inches above the sputtering magnesium fuse, was a single glass vial containing a pale golden fluid labeled: *NEURO-BLOCK SPECIFIC ANTIDOTE.*
Ethan snatched the vial just as the internal thermite ignited, a jet of white flame searing the sleeve of his jacket.
"Medic! Now!" Ethan shouted, tossing the vial across the room.
The flight medic caught it with both hands, broke the sterile seal, and loaded the liquid into a pre-primed syringe. He jammed the needle directly into Lily’s central line port and slammed the plunger down.
Ethan dropped to his knees beside the stretcher, gasping for breath, his hands burned and bleeding.
For ten agonizing seconds, nothing happened. The heart monitor beeped with an erratic, dying rhythm: *Forty beats per minute. Thirty-five. Thirty.*
"Come on, baby," Ethan wept, pressing his forehead against Lily’s small, lifeless arm. "Clara, send her back to me. Clara, please..."
*BEEP... BEEP... BEEP-BEEP-BEEP.*
Lily’s chest hitched violently. A deep, ragged gasp tore through her throat. The lavender hue drained from her cheeks, replaced by a sudden, miraculous flush of rosy warmth. Her eyelids fluttered open, wide and clear, focusing directly on Ethan’s tear-streaked face.
"D-Daddy..." Lily whispered, her tiny voice clear, sweet, and alive. "No more cold."
Ethan buried his face into her chest, sobbing with pure, unbridled relief. He had won. She was safe. Justice was served.
*CLICK.*
The sound of a heavy steel slide racking echoed behind them.
Ethan froze.
He turned his head slowly. Julian was standing near the emergency stairwell, holding a discarded tactical shotgun he had retrieved from the wall armory during the chaos. His face was covered in blood, his clothes torn, his eyes completely unhinged.
"If I can't have my empire," Julian snarled, aiming the heavy barrel directly at Lily’s chest, "nobody leaves this rock alive."
Before Ethan could move, before the medic could scream, Julian didn't fire at the stretcher.
He fired directly into the high-pressure hydraulic ocean-gate valve behind them.
*BOOOM!*

The heavy steel floodgate ruptured. Millions of gallons of freezing, black Pacific seawater smashed through the breach with the force of an avalanche, tearing through the concrete vault, shattering the lights, and swallowing the entire subterranean chamber into a roaring, pitch-black maelstrom.
Ethan lunged through the raging water, his arms wrapping around Lily’s body, locking her against his chest as the floor gave way beneath them, plunging father and daughter into the screaming, lightless abyss below.
