Chapter 13 - The Shadow of St. Jude

The St. Jude Vaults sat beneath the historic financial district of downtown Seattle, an archaic private depository constructed in 1912 with subterranean reinforced steel vaults that operated entirely outside the modern banking grid. No digital databases, no biometric scans that could be hacked from a distance—only physical brass keys, signatures verified by aging clerks, and total, unyielding secrecy.
Ethan arrived at 10:45 AM, forty-five minutes before the deadline written on the blood-red letter. He had left Lily twenty miles away under the round-the-clock protection of three off-duty federal marshals he had hired privately with cash, secured inside a private safehouse equipped with biometric panic rooms. Leaving her tore his soul in half, but dragging a two-year-old into an active ambush was a death sentence.
The clerk at the brass-barred counter was an elderly man named Wallace, wearing gold-rimmed spectacles and a tweed vest that smelled of pipe tobacco and moldering ledgers. When Ethan slid the brass key etched with *IX* across the polished marble counter, the old man’s rheumy eyes dilated with immediate dread.
"Mr. Vance," Wallace whispered, his voice trembling as he looked left and right down the empty, vaulted hall. "We were told... we were instructed that this box was only to be accessed if a secondary verification protocol was triggered."
Ethan leaned forward over the brass counter, his frame radiating lethal intent. He reached into his coat, placing his hand firmly over the grip of his concealed firearm. "My wife rented this box before she was murdered. The key is in my hand. Open it now, Wallace, or you and I are going to have a conversation that this bank’s insurance policy won't cover."
The clerk swallowed hard, nodding rapidly. "Of course. Right this way, sir."
Wallace led Ethan down a spiraling stone staircase into the subterranean depths of the building. The air grew colder, heavy with the weight of two hundred feet of bedrock and concrete. They entered Vault Chamber C, where massive brass-faced safety deposit boxes lined the curved stone walls from floor to ceiling.
Wallace stopped before Box 009. He inserted his master key into the left keyhole, and Ethan jammed the brass key marked *IX* into the right. With a heavy, satisfying metallic clatter, the lock tumblers disengaged.
Wallace stepped back, bowing his head nervously. "I will leave you in privacy, Mr. Vance. You have ten minutes before the vault’s automated pressure door cycles shut for the midday vault sync."
The clerk scurried away, his shoes clicking rapidly up the stone steps until a heavy iron door slammed shut above. Ethan was left alone under the hum of recessed halogen lights.
He pulled the long, narrow steel safety deposit box from its sleeve and set it on the examination table in the center of the vault. His hands were coated in a sheen of cold sweat. Slowly, he lifted the hinged lid.
Inside lay three items:
First: An audio cassette tape labeled *BOARDROOM CONSPIRACY - 10/14*.
Second: A certified copy of Lily’s birth certificate—except Clara Vance’s name was listed as the adoptive mother, not the biological mother.
Third: A glossy photograph that hit Ethan in the chest like a sledgehammer.
It was a picture taken three years ago at a charity gala. In the photograph, Ethan stood smiling with his arm around Clara. But standing directly behind Clara, his hand resting casually on the small of her back in an intimate gesture Ethan had never noticed before, was Julian Cross.
Julian Cross. Ethan’s foster brother, his lifelong business partner, and the co-founder of Vance-Cross Technologies. The man who had sat beside Ethan at Clara’s funeral, weeping openly and holding Ethan’s hand while promising that they would raise Lily together.
Ethan grabbed the birth certificate, his eyes scanning the biological mother's field. The ink was crisp and legal:
*Biological Mother: Evelyn Cross.*
Ethan stumbled backward, the concrete floor tilting violently under his boots. Evelyn wasn't just a sociopathic gold digger who had seduced him after Clara’s death. Evelyn was Julian Cross’s secret, legally separated wife.
The entire marriage, the romance, the courtship, the balcony push—it wasn't about an inheritance. Lily was never Clara’s biological child. Lily was Evelyn and Julian’s daughter, used as a human collateral pawn in a multi-billion-dollar corporate takeover to seize the Vance family trust.
Ethan’s phone buzzed in his pocket. A text message from an unknown number lit up the screen:

*Did you like the family photo, brother? Check your security cameras at the safehouse. You have five minutes before my team breaches the door.*
