Chapter 7 - The Poisoned Tea

By 11:30 AM, the heavy clouds had returned over Greenwich, turning the midday sky into an ominous, slate-gray ceiling.

Ethan stood in the kitchen of his mansion, wearing a clean, dark-gray wool sweater and tailored slacks. The Sig Sauer was concealed beneath his waistband at the small of his back, the cold steel pressing reassuringly against his spine.

On the marble kitchen island sat a silver tea service, steam rising from two porcelain cups of Earl Grey.

The heavy front door clicked open.

Footsteps echoed across the limestone foyer. Not one set, but two.

Vanessa walked into the kitchen first, wearing an elegant camel-hair coat, her hair pinned up, looking radiant, composed, and victorious.

Behind her walked Marcus Vance. Ethan’s cousin was forty-two, impeccably groomed in a bespoke three-piece Savile Row suit, wearing horn-rimmed glasses that gave him the appearance of a scholarly, trustworthy patrician. But his hands were sweating; Ethan could see the slight tremble in his right index finger as he adjusted his silk tie.

"Ethan," Marcus said, his voice dripping with rehearsed, mournful affection. "Thank God you’re home. Vanessa called me in hysterics from the hospital. She told me about the accident. How is our sweet little Lily?"

Ethan didn't move. He stood behind the island, his hands flat against the polished marble. "Lily is safe, Marcus. Safer than she’s been in six months."

Marcus cleared his throat, glancing nervously at Vanessa. "Good. Good. Well, Ethan, Vanessa mentioned that you wanted to settle the trust distribution today. Given the... fragile state of the household and the trauma Lily has endured, I agree that liquidating the offshore assets and simplifying the estate is the most prudent legal maneuver."

Marcus set a thick leather briefcase onto the island, popping the brass latches with a crisp snap. He pulled out a stack of legal documents stamped with the seal of the Grand Court of the Cayman Islands.

"Everything is drafted," Marcus said, pushing a gold Montblanc pen across the marble. "You sign the parental waiver of fiduciary oversight, transfer the bearer bonds from Safe 408, and the funds will be wired to Julian’s escrow account within thirty minutes. Once that clears, Julian will execute a complete, binding covenant not to sue, and Vanessa will sign the divorce settlement."

Ethan looked down at the documents. "Julian Sterling is an embezzler, Marcus. He killed Clara."

Marcus’s face went completely pale. He swallowed hard, his eyes darting toward the front door. "Ethan... please. You’re in shock. You’re making wild, defamatory accusations—"

"Shut up, Marcus," Vanessa interrupted, her voice snapping like a whip.

She walked casually to the island, pulled out one of the leather barstools, and sat down, crossing her long legs. She looked at Ethan with an expression of pure, chilling contempt.

"Drop the moral superiority, Ethan," Vanessa sneered. "We are past the point of theatrical denials. You know who I am. You know who Marcus works for. And you know what happens to your daughter if your signature isn't on that line in the next five minutes."

Ethan looked at her. Then he looked at the two cups of tea steaming between them.

"I made tea," Ethan said quietly. "Earl Grey. Your favorite, Vanessa."

Vanessa let out a mocking laugh. "You think I’m going to drink anything you prepared? Do you take me for an amateur, darling?"

"No," Ethan replied smoothly. "I know you’re a professional, Elena. That’s why you kept the Succinylcholine in the hollowed-out book behind the architecture monographs."

Vanessa froze. The patronizing smirk vanished from her face, replaced by a sudden, predatory tension.

"You went through my room," she whispered.

"I went through everything," Ethan said. He reached into his pocket, pulled out the heavy brass safe-deposit key Vanessa had given him at the hospital, and dropped it onto the marble island. It chimed against the stone. "There are no bearer bonds in Safe 408, Vanessa. Clara wasn't stupid. She knew Julian was hunting her. The real trust documents aren't in Greenwich Private Bank. They’re in an encrypted sovereign server in Zurich, programmed to release directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation the moment my biometric ping fails to update every twenty-four hours."

Marcus gasped, clutching his chest. "Ethan, you didn't! If Julian gets indicted by the Feds, he’ll kill all of us!"

"He’s already planning to kill you, Marcus," Ethan said, his voice chillingly calm. "Do you really think Julian Sterling leaves co-conspirators alive? Look at Clara. Look at Lily. You’re an accessory to attempted murder of a two-year-old child. You think Julian is going to let you sit in a country club while the FBI investigates a forty-five-million-dollar wire fraud?"

Marcus’s hands began to shake violently. He looked at Vanessa, his eyes wide with rising panic. "Vanessa... is that true? Julian promised me complete immunity in Panama! He promised me five million!"

Vanessa didn't look at Marcus. Her eyes remained locked on Ethan, burning with a cold, venomous fury.

Slowly, deliberately, she reached into her coat pocket.

"You should have signed the papers, Ethan," she whispered.

She pulled out a compact, matte-black Glock 43, leveling the barrel directly at Ethan’s chest.

"Vanessa! No! Not in the house!" Marcus shrieked, backing away toward the foyer.

"Shut up, you pathetic coward!" Vanessa barked without moving her aim. "There is no Zurich server, Marcus. He’s bluffing! He’s trying to buy time until his private security reaches the hospital!"

Ethan didn't flinch. He stared down the black bore of the Glock, his hands remaining flat on the marble counter.

"How do you know about my security, Vanessa?" Ethan asked quietly.

A triumphant, wicked grin spread across her lips. "Because Julian’s men have been tapping your personal communications since the day Clara died, darling. Your little friend David and his mercenaries? They were intercepted at the hospital parking gate ten minutes ago."

Vanessa cocked the hammer of the Glock with her thumb.

May you like

"Lily is already in our custody, Ethan. Now sign the papers, or I put a bullet through your kneecaps and let you listen to her drown through the speakerphone."
