Chapter 17 - The Lion’s Den

At 2:00 PM the following afternoon, the glass-and-steel monolith of Vance-Cross Technologies dominated the Seattle skyline like a gleaming monument to modern greed. On the 68th floor, the executive boardroom was bathed in the harsh afternoon glare reflecting off Puget Sound.
A dozen board members sat around a forty-foot mahogany table, listening to Julian Cross deliver a solemn presentation. Julian was dressed in a tailored charcoal Brioni suit, his posture impeccably upright, his hair silvered at the temples. His eyes were moist with manufactured sorrow.
"In light of the tragic car accident that claimed the life of my dear brother Ethan Vance yesterday on Timberline Road," Julian spoke softly, holding up a black leather folder, "and given the continued incapacity of his estate, I am executing the emergency survivorship proxy. Under section 14 of the Vance-Cross charter, all voting shares of the Vance trust, as well as legal guardianship of the surviving minor, Lily Vance, fall to me as co-founder and legal next-of-kin."
The board members, terrified of a stock plunge, nodded solemnly. Several murmured condolences.
"The proxy is valid, Mr. Cross," the corporate attorney stated, sliding a pen across the mahogany surface. "Sign here, and the transition of Vance Technologies becomes absolute."
Julian smiled—a subtle, predatory curve of his lips that he quickly hid behind a solemn nod. He took the pen, resting the nib against the parchment.
*BANG!*
The double mahogany doors of the boardroom blasted inward off their hinges with the force of a hurricane.
Two armed security guards flew across the polished parquet floor, crashing into the glass credenza. Standing in the doorway, drenched in rain, his trench coat torn and his eyes burning like twin crucibles of hellfire, was Ethan Vance.
Beside him stood Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Vance, accompanied by eight federal marshals carrying tactical carbines and wearing Kevlar vests marked *DOJ*.
The board members shrieked, scattering backward from the table like rats.
Julian froze, the pen dropping from his paralyzed fingers. The color drained from his face until his skin resembled wet chalk. "Ethan...?" he stammered, his polished veneer cracking into shards of raw terror. "You're... you were in the vehicle..."
Ethan didn't speak. He walked slowly down the length of the forty-foot table. Every step of his steel-toed combat boots echoed like the stroke of a funeral bell.
"You should have made sure the body was in the car, Julian," Ethan’s voice was unnervingly soft, carrying a lethal weight that choked the air out of the room.
"Security!" Julian shrieked, backing toward the floor-to-ceiling glass windows that overlooked the three-hundred-foot drop to the streets below. "Arrest him! He’s trespassing! He’s insane!"
"Julian Cross," Sarah Vance announced, holding up an official federal indictment stamped with the seal of the United States District Court. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, the attempted kidnapping of a minor, and the premeditated murder of Clara Vance."
"That's a lie!" Julian shouted, sweat pouring down his temples, soaking his starched collar. "You have no proof! Evelyn acted alone! She’s a lunatic! She tried to drown Lily because she hated Clara!"
Ethan stopped three feet from Julian. He reached into his coat, pulled out a small black speaker, and set it on the mahogany table. He pressed play.
Clara’s voice, followed immediately by Julian’s own recorded voice from the encrypted Meridian file, echoed through the chamber with crystalline clarity:
*"The digitalis needs to be increased, Evelyn. Two more milligrams a day. Ethan suspects nothing. Once Clara is in the ground, marry him. Then we take the baby, take the trust, and leave him with an empty pool."*
The silence in the boardroom was absolute. Even the rain outside seemed to pause.
Julian stared at the speaker, his chest heaving, his eyes wide and bloodshot. He looked at the board members—men who had bowed to him an hour ago, now looking at him with utter disgust. He looked at Sarah Vance. He looked at Ethan.
"You took everything from me," Julian hissed, his voice dropping an octave into pure, unadulterated madness. "Your father gave you the company! He gave you the money! He treated me like a stray dog! Lily is *my* blood! She belongs to me!"

"She will never know your name," Ethan whispered.
