Chapter 27 - The Midnight Infiltration

02:15 AM.
The Seattle waterfront was shrouded in cold rain and thick sea smoke. At Pier 54, the black interceptor slipped quietly into a dark slip beneath an abandoned fish-processing pier.
Ethan stepped off the deck into the shadows. He wore a clean, dark tactical coat over a tailored black suit he had acquired from an allied contact Sarah had alerted at the marina. Lily was strapped securely against his chest inside a padded forward-facing carrier, covered in a waterproof micro-fleece shroud so that only her bright, observant eyes peered out.
Waiting in the alley behind the pier was an unmarked black SUV with its engine idling.
The tinted window rolled down. Detective Marcus Ramirez sat behind the wheel, looking hollow-eyed, his service weapon lying on the center console.
When Ramirez saw Ethan—soaked, battered, but walking like an angel of death with Lily alive in his arms—the detective’s jaw dropped.
"Holy Mother of God," Ramirez breathed, unlocking the doors. "They told me you were dead. Julian’s men leaked a report that your bodies were found in the wreckage off Dead Man’s Reef."
"Julian is fish food," Ethan said, sliding into the passenger seat, his eyes locking onto Ramirez’s rear-view mirror. "And Victoria is about to join him."
Ramirez slammed the SUV into drive, tires screeching as they merged into the midnight traffic speeding toward the financial district.
"It's a fortress down there, Ethan," Ramirez warned, glancing at the tactical tablet on his dashboard. "The Vance Tower Gala is on the 80th-floor penthouse ballroom. Victoria has hired two private security platoons—Aegis Global contractors. Metal detectors, biometric scanners, armed snipers on the adjacent roofs. The mayor is there. The governor is there. Half the federal judiciary is in that room."
"Good," Ethan said coldly, checking the magazine of a suppressed Glock 19 Ramirez handed him. "I want the whole world to see who she really is."
"How do we get past the lobby?" Ramirez asked. "Every cop in the city has a photo of your face marked as an armed fugitive who abducted his daughter."
"We don't go through the lobby," Ethan replied, pulling the quantum drive from his coat. "Sarah Vance is feeding us the service grid override. We take the maintenance hoist from the subway tunnel directly into the penthouse server vault."
Ethan looked down at Lily. She reached up, touching the stubble on his jaw.
"Daddy," she said softly. "Bad lady at the party?"
May you like
"Yes, baby," Ethan whispered, his eyes hardening into flint. "The bad lady is at the party. And tonight, we’re going to turn off the lights."
