Chapter 15 - The Crash on Mile Marker 4

Ethan didn't brake.

He gripped the steering wheel with both hands, leaned his weight forward, and smashed the gas pedal through the floorboards. The SUV surged down the narrow, pine-lined road at eighty-five miles an hour, closing the three-hundred-yard gap between his vehicle and the fleeing black van.

The driver of the van saw Ethan in the rearview mirror and swerved violently to block the lane, but Ethan didn't swerve. He aimed his steel front bumper directly at the van’s rear right quarter panel—the classic PIT maneuver executed at fatal speed.

*BOOM!*

The impact sounded like a detonating bomb. The heavy SUV shuddered violently, airbags deploying with a deafening pop, burning Ethan’s forearms with powdered talc. The black van spun wildly out of control, tires screeching against wet asphalt before flipping onto its side, sliding thirty yards across the gravel shoulder and slamming brutally into the trunk of a massive Douglas fir.

Ethan fought his way through the deflated airbag, his forehead bleeding where it had kissed the steering column. He kicked the driver’s door open with a sickening groan of warped metal, stumbled out onto the asphalt, and raised his Glock with both hands.

Steam hissed from his shattered radiator. Silence fell over the forested road, broken only by the crackle of burning brush.

From the crumpled rear doors of the overturned van, a figure kicked the warped steel loose and crawled out into the dirt. It was the tactical operative who had been wielding the thermal torch. He had a submachine gun strapped across his chest, blood dripping into his eyes.

Before the operative could raise his weapon, Ethan squeezed the trigger three times.

*Crack! Crack! Crack!*

The operative dropped into the gravel, motionless.

Ethan ran toward the smoking wreckage of the van, his lungs burning with smoke and adrenaline. He hauled himself onto the overturned chassis, peering into the shattered rear cargo bay.

The driver was slumped unconscious in the front cabin, neck twisted at an unnatural angle. In the center of the cargo bay, strapped into an armored car seat secured to the floorboards, sat Lily.

She was crying, her face blotchy and red, small tears carving clean paths through the soot on her cheeks. But she was alive. Unscratched. And clutched fiercely in her tiny, trembling fingers was Clara’s silver heart-shaped locket.

"Lily!" Ethan cried, dropping into the wreckage, slicing the straps of the car seat with his tactical knife.

"Daddy!" Lily screamed, throwing her small arms around Ethan’s neck with desperate, bone-crushing strength. "Daddy! Bad men! Daddy come!"

"I’m here, baby! Daddy’s got you! I’ve got you!" Ethan sobbed, burying his face in her hair, kissing her damp forehead over and over again as he hoisted her out of the flaming van.

He staggered away from the wreckage, carrying Lily back toward the road just as the van’s fuel tank ignited in a rolling fireball of orange flame and black smoke. The shockwave knocked him to one knee, but he shielded Lily’s body with his own back, absorbing the falling ash and heat.

Lily buried her face into his neck, whimpering softly. She pulled the silver locket from her collar and shoved it against Ethan’s lips. "Mama said... Mama said listen."

Ethan paused, panting for air, looking down at the tarnished silver pendant. "What did you say, Lily?"

"Mama said click it," Lily whispered, her innocent eyes staring into his. "Under the tree. Mama put the bug inside."

Ethan stared at the locket. Clara hadn't just given Lily a piece of jewelry. Clara had known she was being murdered.
