Chapter 28 - The Masquerade of the Damned

Eighty stories above Seattle, the Vance Penthouse Ballroom glittered like a diamond suspended in the clouds.

Crystal chandeliers cast golden light over hundreds of guests dressed in bespoke tuxedos and designer silk gowns. Champagne flutes clinked, classical violins played, and high-society laughter echoed against floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows overlooking the rain-slicked city.

At the center of the grand stage stood Victoria Vance.

She looked breathtaking—and monstrous. Dressed in a blood-red silk designer evening gown that clung to her silhouette, diamonds dripping from her neck and wrists, her blonde hair swept into an immaculate chignon. In her hand, she held a crystal glass of Dom Pérignon.

Her smile was dazzling, radiating the poised grief of a tragic widow and devoted stepmother.

Standing beside her was Senator Raymond Sterling, the chairman of the Federal Bio-Defense Committee, holding a golden pen over the ceremonial trust merger documents.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Victoria’s voice floated through the ballroom speakers, rich, melodious, and laced with theatrical sorrow. "Tonight is not a celebration of victory, but of solemn legacy. As many of you know... my beloved husband Ethan, overcome by the tragic madness that plagued him since Clara’s passing, took our precious Lily into the storm. Though the coast guard has not recovered their remains, we must face the heartbreaking reality."

A low murmur of rehearsed sympathy rippled through the elite crowd.

Victoria brought a lace handkerchief to the corner of her eye, suppressing a manufactured tear. "Clara’s vision cannot die with them. By signing the Vance Bio-Trust into the Aegis Global Consortium tonight, we ensure that Clara's research will protect national security for generations to come."

"A truly heroic gesture in the face of profound personal tragedy," Senator Sterling announced into the microphone. "Victoria, as the sole surviving executrix of the Vance estate, your signature authorizes the immediate liquidation and sovereign transfer."

Victoria took the golden pen. Her lips curved into a tiny, venomous smirk that only those closest to the podium could see.

She was three inches from the signature line.

*CLACK-CLACK.*

The sound was not loud, but it cut through the violins like a razor.

Every single light in the ballroom suddenly flickered, turned blood-red, and died.

The entire 80th floor was plunged into total, pitch-black darkness.

The music stopped. Gasps and terrified shrieks erupted from the crowd.

"What happened to the auxiliary power?!" Victoria shouted, dropping the pen, her poise cracking. "Security! Get the perimeter lights on now!"

*HUMMMMM.*

A low, vibrating electromagnetic pulse rolled through the floorboards.

Then, the massive 400-inch panoramic projection screen behind the grand stage flared to life.

It didn't display the corporate logo.

It displayed a crystal-clear, high-definition security recording from three weeks ago:

The second-floor balcony of Ethan’s estate.

Victoria, her face twisted in sneering hatred, violently shoving two-year-old Lily Vance off the railing into the deep pool below, followed by her cold, deliberate closing of the glass door.

The ballroom erupted into sheer, unadulterated pandemonium.
