Chapter 14 - The Snake in the Sanctuary

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. The tension in the study thickened until it felt suffocating. Dr. Finch slowly pushed his chair back from the desk, his knuckles turning pale against his knees.

"What did you just say, Martha?" Julian asked, rising slowly, his eyes narrowing into cold slits.

Martha’s expression softened, the momentary coldness evaporating like mist over the Hudson. She pressed a hand to her apron, looking at Julian with wide, sorrowful eyes. "I meant, sir, that I was there when poor Mrs. Claire drowned in her own lung fluids. I saw how she suffered. And when you speak of monsters and poisons in this house, you forget that I lived that nightmare beside you. My niece works at the executive offices in Manhattan—she called to tell me the board members were being summoned by Arthur Vance."

Julian blinked. The name struck him like a physical blow.

"Arthur Vance?" Julian echoed, his mind racing through the labyrinth of corporate rosters. "Arthur Vance is the Senior Vice President of Corporate Holdings. Martha... is Arthur related to you?"

"My late husband’s brother," Martha said quietly, lowering her head in apparent shame. "A man of endless greed. When Claire fell ill, Arthur tried to force me to leave this estate. He said the Sterling family was cursed. I refused. I stayed for Lily. But Julian... Arthur was Victoria’s closest ally when she moved into this house. If someone poisoned Claire, you look at Arthur’s hands before you look at anyone else’s."

Before Julian could answer, the shrill, deafening blast of an alarm tore through the mansion.

*WHEEEEE-OOOOH! WHEEEEE-OOOOH!*

The master security panel on the study wall flashed bright red: **PERIMETER BREACH - EAST COTTAGE - FIRE DETECTED.**

"Lily!" Julian screamed.

He vaulted over the desk, pushing past Martha and Dr. Finch, sprinting into the corridor. The smell of thick, petroleum-based smoke was already drifting down the eastern wing from the corridor leading to Martha’s newly gifted cottage. Through the tall windows, orange tongues of fire were licking the night sky, consuming the roof of the guest house where Martha had stored her lifelong belongings.

"Stay here! Lock the nursery!" Julian bellowed back at Martha as he snatched an extinguisher from the wall and sprinted toward the blazing terrace.

Outside, the autumn wind was fanning a raging inferno. The timber-framed cottage was roaring like a furnace. Security guards were scrambling across the lawn with high-pressure hoses, their shouts lost in the roar of the flames.

"Mr. Sterling! Step back! The structural beams are failing!" shouted Briggs, the head of private security, tackling Julian by the shoulder as Julian tried to lunge through the front door.

"Is anyone inside?!" Julian yelled over the crackle of burning cedar.

"No, sir! The cottage was empty! But look at the perimeter wall!"

Julian turned his head.

Spray-painted across the pristine white limestone wall flanking the garden, in jagged crimson letters that dripped like fresh blood under the glow of the floodlights, was a terrifying message:

**THE BROTH WAS ONLY THE APPETIZER. AN EYE FOR AN EYE, LILY DIES TONIGHT.**

Julian felt the universe drop out from under him.

*It was a diversion.*

"The nursery!" Julian screamed, ripping himself free from Briggs’s grip with superhuman adrenaline. "IT’S A DIVERSION! GET TO THE NURSERY!"

Julian sprinted across the dew-soaked lawn, his boots tearing through the grass, his lungs burning as if he had swallowed embers. He burst through the terrace doors, through the smoke-hazed kitchen, and up the main staircase.

The third-floor hallway was dead silent.

The security guard assigned to Lily’s door lay sprawled on the hardwood floor, a syringe protruding from the side of his neck, foam bubbling at the corners of his mouth.

"NO! NO! NO!" Julian roared, kicking the nursery door off its latch.

The room was plunged in darkness. The window was shattered, glass littering the wooden floor, the cold night wind whipping the lace curtains into ghostly shapes.

Lily’s crib was empty.

Her knitted bunny lay torn in half on the sheepskin rug. And standing over the empty bed, holding a dripping combat blade, was a figure dressed head-to-toe in black tactical gear.
