Chapter 5 - Autopsy of a Marriage

The revelation struck the room like a concussive shockwave.

Arthur stumbled backward against the mahogany bar, gripping the counter edge until his knuckles turned chalk-white. "That's... that's impossible. Claire died in a single-vehicle rollover on Route 9. The brakes failed. It was ruled a mechanical tragedy!"

"The brakes failed because the electronic control module was flashed with malware, Arthur," Julian stated, his voice completely level, devoid of human warmth. "And Claire’s blood contained enough arsenic to cause sudden vertigo, blurred vision, and delayed motor reflexes. She didn't lose control because of wet asphalt. She lost control because she was actively being poisoned."

Julian turned the amber bottle over in his hand, letting the pharmaceutical label catch the harsh halogen lights.

"The prescription was filled under a pseudonym at a boutique compounding pharmacy in Zurich," Julian continued. "A pharmacy exclusively patronized by the Van Kempt holding company. I have the wire transfers, Preston. Signed by your personal digital signature."

Preston’s knees gave out. He collapsed onto an ottoman, clutching his head in both hands. "No... no, Father, I didn't know! She told me she needed funds for an off-the-books investment! I swear to God, Julian, I didn't know she was buying poison!"

"You're a coward, Preston," Victoria spat suddenly, her hands dropping from her face.

The mask of fragility was completely gone. In its place was a creature of naked, rabid malice. She rose from the couch, her eyes bloodshot, her lips curled in a grotesque sneer that stripped every trace of beauty from her porcelain features.

"Yes! I did it!" she screamed, her voice echoing violently across the penthouse. "Claire was a weak, pathetic little nobody! An orphan painter from Ohio who had no right to sit at the top of New York society! She had everything I deserved! She had you, she had the Sterling empire, and she was going to have your legacy! I took her out, Julian! I took her out, and you were so blind, so desperate for comfort, that you married me four months later!"

Arthur lunged forward, his face purple with rage. "Victoria, shut your mouth!"

"Why should I?!" she shrieked, knocking a crystal vase off the console table. It shattered into a thousand glittering shards. "He knows! Look at him—he knows everything! And he can't undo it! Claire is rotting in the ground, Julian! Her bones are dust! And no matter how much you hate me, I was the one who wore her emeralds! I was the one who slept in her bed!"

Julian didn't flinch. He didn't strike her. He stood like an ancient monolith amidst her manic tempest, watching her self-destruct with cold, diagnostic precision.

"You didn't just sleep in her bed, Victoria," Julian said quietly. "You confessed on police audio."

He reached to his lapel and pulled off a tiny, matte-black lapel pin.

A green LED pulsed softly against the titanium casing.

"Detective Kane is sitting in a surveillance van parked across the street from this hotel," Julian informed her, the words landing like lead weights. "Every syllable of your confession was transmitted directly to the Manhattan District Attorney’s office and recorded on the state’s evidentiary server. There is no bail. There is no plea bargain. There is no Swiss clinic."

Victoria’s manic grin vanished instantly. Her jaw fell open, her chest heaving as the horrific reality closed around her like an iron maiden.

Sirens began to wail in the distance—not one or two, but a symphony of high-pitched emergency sirens converging on the Carlyle Hotel from Madison and Lexington Avenues.

"Arthur," Julian said, turning his cold gaze upon the patriarch. "By nine o'clock tomorrow morning, my banks will freeze all credit lines extended to Van Kempt Global. Every short position I hold against your public assets will be executed simultaneously. By noon, the Van Kempt name will be synonymous with murder, bankruptcy, and filth."

"Julian, please..." Arthur croaked, tears of humiliation pooling in his aged eyes. "We are an old family. Two hundred years of history..."

"Then you should have raised a daughter who wasn't a monster," Julian said.

The penthouse doors burst open with explosive force.

A dozen tactical NYPD officers in heavy body armor swarmed the suite, their semi-automatic rifles leveled, red laser sights cutting through the smoke.

"NYPD! Put your hands on your heads! Down on the floor, now!"

Preston immediately dropped to his knees, burying his face in the carpet. Arthur slowly raised his trembling hands, leaning heavily against the bar as if his spine had turned to dust.

Victoria stood frozen in the center of the room. As two officers moved in with heavy zip-ties, she lunged toward Julian, her manicured nails aiming for his eyes like talons.

"I will kill her!" Victoria screamed, foam gathering at the corners of her mouth. "I will get out of this, Julian! I will find Lily and I will finish what I started! I will burn Claire’s blood out of this world!"

Before she could reach him, a towering tactical officer intercepted her, sweeping her legs out from under her with professional brutality. Victoria struck the floor hard, her chin bouncing off the parquet, the air rushing from her lungs in a pathetic wheeze.

*Click-clack.*

The steel handcuffs clamped shut around her wrists, ratcheting tight against the delicate bone.

Julian didn't look down at her as she was hauled up, sobbing and thrashing, dragged out of the suite like a common felon. He turned his back on the Van Kempt dynasty, stepped past the flashing red police lights in the hallway, and walked toward the elevator.

His phone buzzed in his pocket. It was Dr. Thorne.

Julian answered instantly, his heart seizing in his throat. "Aris? Is it Lily?"

May you like

"Lily is stable, Julian," Aris’s voice came through, heavy with exhaustion but tinged with deep relief. "The debridement was successful. No signs of infection. But... it’s Martha. She’s coding. You need to get back here right now."
