Chapter 35 - The Stepmother’s Reckoning

The Bedford Hills estate was built behind twelve-foot wrought-iron gates, surrounded by five hundred acres of manicured equestrian paddocks and ancient oak trees. In the driving rain, the limestone mansion looked less like a home and more like an antebellum fortress.

Inside the sprawling, marble-floored kitchen—the very kitchen where, four months ago, a heavy copper pot of boiling broth had been overturned onto a little girl—Victoria Vance sat in a plush velvet armchair.

Her expensive silk blouse was torn at the collar, soaked in mud from her escape across the tarmac. A large bruise bloomed purple across her cheekbone where shrapnel had grazed her. But her manicured hands were steady as she tapped keys on a liquid-cooled server rig set up directly on the Italian marble island.

Beside her stood two men in sterile gray tactical uniforms, their faces hidden behind matte-black ballistic masks, suppressed carbines held low across their chests.

"Ninety-two percent," Victoria whispered, her voice trembling with manic excitement. A glass of vintage Scotch rested near her elbow, untouched. "The node survived the crash. The pulse didn't wipe the child’s hippocampus."

"The Board is impatient, Mrs. Vance," one of the masked men said, his voice mechanically modulated through his helmet. "The stealth transport was compromised over Westchester airspace. Clean-up teams are already executing perimeter sweeps. If the final encryption segment is not decrypted within ten minutes, this facility will be leveled."

Victoria sneered, taking a sip of the amber liquid. "Tell the Board to keep their hands off their detonators. I gave seven years of my life to that pathetic fool Julian. I played mother to that lab-grown abomination. I endured his middle-class banalities, his architectural sketches, his repulsive domesticity!"

She slammed the glass down, shattering the crystal base against the granite.

"I was promised five percent of the Bedford Trust," she spat, her eyes wild with greed. "Seventy-four billion dollars. That child carries the liquidation codes for three sovereign wealth funds. When the upload hits one hundred percent, I walk away with three point seven billion. You tell the Chairman that if he cuts my feed, the decryption key self-destructs."

"The Chairman doesn't negotiate with technicians," a voice echoed from the shadowed hallway.

The two masked guards raised their rifles instantly, swinging toward the entrance of the kitchen.

A figure stepped out of the darkness.

It wasn't Julian. It wasn't Claire.

It was an older man, impeccably dressed in a charcoal Savile Row three-piece suit, leaning on a cane with an obsidian pommel. His silver hair was swept back from a face carved from aristocratic cruelty. Behind him stood four more operators, their weapons already raised.

Victoria’s breath caught. The color drained from her lips. "Chairman Sterling..."

"You were never a technician, Victoria," Sterling said smoothly, his British accent dripping with quiet disdain. "You were bait. You were the abrasive surface upon which we struck the match."

"I... I followed every instruction!" Victoria stammered, stepping back toward the island, her hands searching behind her for a weapon. "I scalded the girl! I activated the secondary neural layer just like your medical team specified! The transmission is almost complete!"

"Indeed," Sterling murmured, stopping five feet from her. He looked at the server screen with cold amusement. "Ninety-six percent. Remarkable efficiency. But you made a fatal calculation, my dear."

"What calculation?"

Sterling smiled, cold and dead. "You assumed the ledger was meant to be shared. You assumed that after exposing the child’s existence to the public via that delightfully theatrical soup incident, we would allow the person who held the scalding pot to live to spend her cut?"

Victoria froze.

"The public outrage was necessary," Sterling explained softly, tapping his cane against the marble. "The viral videos of the burn ward, the courtroom drama—it created the perfect smoke screen. The press thought you were a monster of domestic cruelty. While the district attorney was busy prosecuting a high-society child-abuse scandal, we were calibrating the girl's transponder frequencies under the guise of medical scans at St. Jude’s."

Sterling nodded to the guards behind him.

"Sterilize the room," the Chairman commanded. "And secure the final four percent."

Before Victoria could scream, a deafening crash obliterated the mansion’s bay windows.

A high-velocity sniper round tore through the throat of the guard on Victoria’s right, painting the white marble island in a violent fan of crimson.
