Chapter 37 - The Ghost Frequency

The cellar beneath the Bedford Hills estate was not a wine vault.

Behind a hidden hydraulic door masked by vintage oak racks lay a medical-grade bunker—the "Hive," as Claire called it. It smelled of formaldehyde, surgical spirits, and refrigerated air. Rows of server blades hummed against the far wall, their cooling fans emitting a high-pitched whine that set Julian’s teeth on edge.

In the center of the room sat a stainless-steel operating chair equipped with heavy leather restraints and overhead surgical telemetry pods.

Claire had dragged Lily inside wrapped in an emergency space-blanket. The child was burning up; her skin radiated heat like a radiator, and her breathing was a series of wet, shallow rasps. The synthetic fibers beneath the burn on her shoulder were no longer glowing red—they were pulsing a toxic, violent purple, spreading outward across her neck and toward her jawline.

Julian shoved Victoria into the chair opposite the diagnostic terminal. His pistol was pressed firmly against the base of her skull.

"Unlock it," Julian ordered.

Victoria’s hands were shaking violently as she placed her palm on the biometric scanner. "The Chairman has the master override. Even if I reverse the transmission, his satellite uplink will try to force a purge."

"Then block the uplink!" Claire yelled, connecting Lily’s transponder leads to the central console. "Julian, hold Lily’s head! She’s going into convulsions!"

Julian lunged to the examination table, pressing his hands against his daughter’s thrashing shoulders. Lily’s body buckled, her spine bowing as a terrifying shriek tore from her small lungs. Her eyes rolled violently, blood beginning to trickle from her nostrils.

"Daddy! Daddy, it's so hot! Turn off the stove!" she screamed, her small fingers clawing at Julian’s sleeves. "The water is boiling, Daddy! Please! She's holding me!"

"I'm here, Lily! I'm here!" Julian wept openly, using his chest to pin her thrashing limbs to the table. "Claire, do it! Do it now!"

"Handshake established!" Claire cried out, her fingers flying over the keyboard. "Downloading the cipher-break... Victoria, enter your authorization code!"

Victoria hesitated, her eyes flickering to the security monitors on the wall.

On the black-and-white screens, heavy armored personnel carriers were already rolling through the estate’s crushed iron gates. Dozens of tactical operators in full vacuum-rated gear were deploying across the lawn.

"They're here," Victoria whispered, a sick despair choking her voice. "The Board isn't here to capture us. They've deployed the Cleansers. They're going to gas the entire subterranean complex with Sarin."

"The code, Victoria!" Julian roared, spinning around, leveling his gun at her kneecap. "Give her the code or I will shatter your bones one inch at a time!"

"Vance-Seven-Zero-Zero-Delta!" Victoria screamed.

Claire hit the execute key.

The monitors flickered. A high-frequency whine blasted through the bunker’s intercom speakers, so intense that Julian’s nose began to bleed. On the steel table, Lily stiffened, her mouth wide open in a silent, paralyzed scream.

Then, across the massive main display wall of the bunker, the data stream broke apart.

It wasn't just raw alphanumeric code anymore. The transmission had converted into a live, high-definition broadcast feed.

Julian froze.

On the screen was a live video feed of an opulent, mahogany-paneled boardroom. Around a massive circular table sat eight individuals—men and women whose faces were recognizable from international news broadcasts, global financial summits, and high-ranking intelligence committees.

And in the center of their table, projected as a rotating 3D holographic wireframe, was Lily’s brain.

A synthesized voice echoed through the boardroom speakers:

*"Neural asset decryption halted at 98.4%. Commencing remote forced-liquidation to prevent asset capture."*

The elderly man at the head of the table—Chairman Sterling—leaned into his microphone, his voice cold as liquid nitrogen:

*"Authorize orbital microwave pulse. Fry the bunker. Let nothing survive."*
