Chapter 38 - Scars That Bleed Code

"They're firing the orbital relay!" Claire screamed, ripping cables from the diagnostic wall. "We have ninety seconds before a high-yield thermal burst hits this coordinate! Julian, we have to move her!"
"She can't move!" Julian yelled back, holding Lily’s seizing body. The purple luminescence under her skin was turning black, crawling toward her jugular. "Claire, the purge is happening inside her head! Look at her!"
Lily’s small hands had locked into rigid claws. Her mouth was slack, a continuous stream of low-frequency static humming from her vocal cords.
Victoria suddenly began to laugh—a broken, hysterical cackle that bounced off the stainless-steel walls. "It's over, Julian! You can't fight them! You're a house-builder! You draw blueprints for swimming pools! These people own the sky! They own the satellites! We are all going to burn in this basement!"
Julian didn't look at his wife. He looked at the scalpel resting on the surgical tray beside Lily’s head.
He remembered the emergency room. He remembered the doctor saying: *“The burn is deep, Mr. Vance. Second and third degree. If we don't debride the dead tissue immediately, the infection will reach the bone.”*
*Debride the dead tissue.*
Julian grabbed the scalpel.
"Julian, what are you doing?!" Claire lunged toward him, but Julian pushed her back with an iron forearm.
"The chip isn't in her brain," Julian said, his eyes wild with a sudden, desperate realization. "The transponder... it's in the burn. Victoria placed it in the scar tissue because the skin was already destroyed! That’s why she poured the soup right there! To hide the surgical incision beneath a domestic burn!"
Claire froze, her medical training colliding with Julian’s terrifying deduction. "The thermal signature... if you cut the node out while it's broadcasting, the orbital relay will track the severed chip, not Lily!"
"Hold her legs," Julian commanded.
"Julian, without anesthesia, the shock could kill her!" Claire wept.
"She dies if we stay! Hold her!"
Claire dropped to her knees, throwing her weight across Lily’s thrashing legs.
Julian leaned over his daughter. His hands were shaking with violent tremors, but as the steel blade hovered millimeters above the raw, blistered skin of Lily’s shoulder, a profound, supernatural calm washed over him.
"Lily," he whispered softly, his lips touching her sweat-soaked forehead. "Daddy’s sorry. Daddy’s so, so sorry."
Julian plunged the scalpel into the center of the pulsing purple node.
Lily’s scream ripped through the concrete bunker, a sound of such unadulterated agony that Victoria stopped laughing, covering her ears in horror. Black, synthetic fluid—thick as motor oil and streaked with crimson blood—erupted from the incision.
Julian didn't stop. He clamped his teeth together until his molars cracked, his fingers digging into the open wound. He felt the cold, hard edges of the silicon wafer wedged against the girl’s collarbone.
*Ten seconds to orbital discharge,* the automated system chimed.
Julian hooked his fingers under the wafer. With a savage, guttural roar, he ripped the device free from the flesh, tearing away the synthetic fibers anchored to Lily’s nerve endings.
Lily instantly went limp, collapsing into absolute silence, her chest falling still.
Julian spun, covered in his daughter's blood and machine fluid. He marched across the room toward Victoria, who was cowering in the corner.
"Julian... no... Julian, please—"
May you like
Julian shoved the dripping, pulsing silicon wafer directly into Victoria’s open mouth, clamping his hand over her jaw with crushing force, forcing her head back against the concrete wall.
"You wanted the ledger," Julian whispered into her terrified eyes. "Keep it."
