Chapter 59 - Blood Across the Penthouse Glass

Julian didn't hesitate. He squeezed the trigger.
The burst of high-velocity rounds tore through the mechanical Claire’s throat and chest. Sparks, synthetic hydraulic fluid, and dark crimson blood erupted from her body as she was thrown backward against a steel console. But even as she fell, the stasis tanks behind them began to hiss, the emergency drainage valves opening to release the clones into the room.
"Beatrice! Elevators! Now!" Julian roared, pulling a fragmentation grenade from his tactical vest, ripping the pin with his teeth, and hurling it directly into the master power transformer flanking the stasis line.
"Thorne has the baby on the top floor!" Lily screamed, grabbing Julian's coat. Her voice was no longer that of a passenger; she was guiding them, her internal connection mapping the building's infrastructure. "The roof, Daddy! The roof!"
The grenade detonated. A massive wave of blue electrical fire washed across the stasis pods, shattering the glass and sending thousands of gallons of amniotic fluid cascading across the concrete floor. The newly awakened clones thrashed in the electrified water, screaming in fragmented, robotic frequencies.
Julian, Beatrice, and Lily threw themselves into the express service lift. Beatrice jammed the emergency bypass key into the ceiling panel, sending the high-speed car shooting upward toward the eighty-fourth floor at forty miles an hour.
The ride took twenty seconds—twenty seconds of agonizing silence broken only by the sound of Julian reloading his magazines and the relentless, accelerating *thump-thump-thump* of Lily's chest implant.
The elevator slammed to a halt at the penthouse level.
The doors opened onto the windswept, rain-drenched rooftop observation deck.
The Tokyo typhoon roared around them. Rain swept across the helipad in sheets of blinding water. On the center of the pad, sitting beneath the spinning blades of an idling heavy-lift Sikorsky helicopter, was Dr. Aris Thorne.
In his arms, he held the Generation Five infant, wrapped in a protective, weather-sealed tactical bassinet.
Flanking him were four heavily armored Syndicate enforcers with heavy submachine guns.
"Put the gun down, Julian!" Thorne shouted over the deafening scream of the helicopter turbines. He pulled a sleek, silver remote detonator from his breast pocket. "You take one step closer, and I initiate the neural purge on both of them! Lily’s brain will liquefy where she stands!"
Julian walked out into the driving rain, lowering his rifle to the wet asphalt. Water plastered his hair to his skull, washing the dried blood from his face. Beatrice stepped to his flank, her weapon aimed at Thorne's head, but her finger was frozen on the trigger.
Lily walked forward on her own, stepping past Julian.
Her bare feet splashed in the cold puddles. She didn't look at Thorne. She looked directly at the infant in the bassinet.
The baby looked back.
Between the two children, an invisible, high-frequency electromagnetic bridge snapped into existence. The air between them shimmered, distorting the rain into swirling, vaporous spirals.
The red light on Lily’s scarred shoulder burned with blinding intensity, shining through her wet clothes like an open furnace. The light on the baby’s chest responded, flashing in perfect, mirror-image synchronicity.
*Blink.*
*Blink.*
*Blink.*
"Yes..." Thorne breathed, his eyes wide with fanatical ecstasy as he watched the telemetry on his wrist monitor spike into the terabyte range. "The handshake is complete! The transfer is executing!"
"Julian..." Beatrice whispered, her eyes wide with terror as she watched Lily's face. "Look at her eyes."
May you like
Lily’s hazel eyes had lost all color. They had turned completely, terrifyingly black.
