Chapter 58 - The Mother with Ten Faces

The subterranean service elevators of the Mori-Takashi Tower did not require keycards. As Julian, Beatrice, and Lily stepped into the cavernous, freight-sized elevator car, the doors slid shut automatically with a heavy pneumatic thud.
The digital display didn't count up toward the penthouse.
It counted down.
**B1... B4... B8... B12.**
The doors hissed open.
The air that rushed into the car smelled of liquid nitrogen, ozone, and the unmistakable, metallic tang of amniotic fluid. Julian stepped out first, assault rifle raised, his tactical flashlight cutting through a vast, cavernous hall that stretched for a hundred yards beneath the Tokyo bedrock.
What lay before them was not an office. It was a cathedral of horrors.
Suspended from the ceiling on hydraulic steel tracks were dozens of cylindrical glass pods filled with pale amber fluid. Inside each pod floated a human body—suspended in stasis, wired to spinal data cables that pulsed with rhythmic crimson light.
Every single body was Claire Vance.
There were younger versions—Claire at twenty, with soft, innocent features. There were mature versions—Claire at thirty-five, identical to the woman Julian had married. And there were terrifying, augmented iterations whose limbs were entirely replaced by sleek carbon-fiber prosthetics, their skulls fitted with cranial transceivers.
"My God..." Beatrice breathed, her weapon lowering an inch in sheer, unadulterated revulsion. "How many of them are there?"
"She was never a woman, Beatrice," Julian said, his voice deadly cold as he stared at the suspended gallery of monsters. "She was an iteration. A product line."
"Not a product line, Julian," a voice echoed from the shadows at the far end of the hall. "A consensus."
Stepping out from between two rows of stasis pods was the Claire who had fallen into the drainage trench at Blackwood Manor.
She was horrifying to behold. Her right arm had been completely replaced with an unpainted, military-grade hydraulic chassis. Her skull on the left side was exposed bone and titanium plate, her eye a glowing, multi-faceted optical sensor that clicked and whirred as it adjusted focus. She wore a tailored black evening gown that dragged through the condensation pooling on the concrete floor.
Beside her stood Dr. Aris Thorne, his hands folded behind his back, looking at Julian as if he were an amusing specimen under a microscope.
"You are exceptionally stubborn, Mr. Vance," Thorne said calmly. "Most men would have had the decency to die when their home fell on them. But you dragged yourself across an ocean just to deliver our final component directly to our front door."
Julian didn't lower his rifle. He aligned the red dot of his optic directly between Claire's synthetic eyes.
"Step away from the control console, Thorne, or I blow her head off."
Claire chuckled—a dry, mechanical rattle that sounded like dry leaves scraping across a tombstone.
"Shoot me, Julian," she whispered, taking a step forward. "Go ahead. Squeeze the trigger. Which one of us do you think you’re killing?"
As she spoke, the stasis pods surrounding them began to hum.
Inside the glass tubes, the eyes of twelve dormant Claire clones snapped open simultaneously.
Their red optical lights illuminated the fluid in an eerie, bloody glow. Inside the tanks, twelve pairs of hands pressed against the glass, their synthetic vocalizers buzzing through the fluid in perfect, terrifying unison:
