Chapter 20 - The Resurrection Protocol

The bedroom door was kicked open.

A dozen tactical officers in black body armor poured into the room, their assault rifles raised, lasers painting the walls in emerald green dots.

"DON'T MOVE! HANDS IN THE AIR! DROP TO YOUR KNEES!" the lead officer barked.

Julian raised his hands slowly, stepping between the police and his daughter. "I'm Julian Sterling! The child is safe! The suspect is on the floor—"

"JULIAN STERLING, STEP AWAY FROM THE WEAPON AND GET ON YOUR KNEES!" the commander roared.

Julian blinked in complete disorientation. The tactical officers weren't aiming their rifles at Martha.

Every single red and green laser sight in the room was locked dead-center onto Julian’s chest.

"What are you doing?!" Julian yelled, his voice cracking. "She’s the one who poisoned my wife! Check the security footage!"

"The security footage was uploaded ten minutes ago, Mr. Sterling," the commander said cold-bloodedly, snapping a pair of heavy titanium handcuffs around Julian’s wrists, forcing him violently down onto his knees against the floor. "We have high-definition audio and video of you breaking into the medical supply wing of Sterling Pharma two hours ago, stealing twenty vials of Tetrodotoxin, and setting the garden cottage on fire to cover your tracks."

"THAT WASN'T ME!" Julian screamed, struggling against the crushing weight of two officers pinning his shoulders. "LOOK AT MY FACE! SOMEONE SPOOFED THE SYSTEM!"

Martha Vance was gently assisted to her feet by a female officer. Martha clutched her bruised throat, weeping softly, her eyes filled with manufactured, heartbreaking grief.

"I tried to stop him, officer..." Martha sobbed, leaning heavily against the officer’s arm. "He lost his mind after Victoria’s trial. He blamed everyone... he blamed poor Lily... he tried to force her to drink the poison so he could collect the insurance money and flee the country..."

"YOU LYING DEMON!" Julian roared, thrashing against his restraints, veins bulging across his neck. "LILY! TELL THEM! TELL THEM WHAT NANA MARTHA DID!"

Lily stood frozen in the corner, her eyes wide with unimaginable terror, completely traumatized by the chaos, the guns, the screaming men in black helmets. She opened her mouth, but only a dry, silent gasp emerged.

"Get the child to an ambulance!" the commander ordered. "Take him to the transport vehicle!"

As Julian was dragged backward through the shattered doorway of the panic room, his boots scraping across the floor, he caught a final glimpse of Martha Vance standing by the window.

She had turned away from the officers.

She looked directly at Julian through the sea of flashing red and blue lights.

Slowly, deliberately, Martha reached into her apron pocket and pulled out a second mobile phone—a sleek, burner satellite device.

She tapped the screen once, holding it up so only Julian could see the incoming video call.

The video feed connected.

On the screen was not a dark room or a prison transport.

It was a woman sitting in the private leather cabin of a Gulfstream G650 jet, cruising at forty thousand feet above the Atlantic Ocean. She had bandages wrapped around her jaw, but her golden blonde hair was freshly styled, a crystal glass of Dom Pérignon held elegantly in her unscarred hand.

Victoria Sterling smiled through the digital screen, raised her glass to Julian in a silent, mocking toast, and blew him a kiss.

Beside Victoria in the private jet cabin sat a man whose face was hidden in the shadows—wearing a bespoke three-piece suit, his hand resting upon the worn, leather-bound laboratory journal of Claire Sterling.

Then, from the pocket of Lily’s discarded woolen sweater resting on the floor beside the broken broth bowl, a small digital voice transmitter—hidden inside the stitched ear of her knitted bunny—clicked on.

A voice spoke through the tiny speaker.

A voice that did not belong to Victoria.

A voice that did not belong to Martha.

It was Claire’s voice—not from a three-year-old tape, but live, breathing, and speaking in real-time:

*"Julian... if you want Lily to live to see tomorrow morning, do not say another word to the police. I am waiting for you where we first drowned."*
