Chapter 36 - The Hive at Deep Springs

The second shot took out the server's power converter in an explosion of blue sparks and shattered circuits.

The kitchen descended into pandemonium. The masked operators swung their weapons toward the rain-swept gardens, firing blindly through the broken glass in full-auto bursts. Chairman Sterling didn't flinch; his personal guards immediately formed a human shield, hustling the elderly billionaire back into the reinforced hallway.

"Kill her!" Sterling shouted calmly over his shoulder. "Leave nothing!"

Victoria scrambled across the blood-slick floor, diving behind the heavy butcher-block island as bullets chewed through the custom cabinetry above her head. Wine bottles shattered in the overhead rack, raining aged Merlot and glass shards onto her back.

Through the fog and rain outside, a silhouette breached the terrace.

Julian Vance moved with a cold, terrifying economy of motion. He wasn't wearing an architect’s tweed coat anymore. He wore a damp utility jacket, Claire’s secondary sidearm gripped in his right hand.

When the first operator turned to engage him, Julian didn't dive or shout. He closed the distance in two lunging strides, batting the rifle barrel aside with his left forearm and driving the muzzle of his pistol straight under the operator’s chin.

*Crack.*

The operator dropped limp. Julian caught the man’s falling carbine, spun, and fired a three-round burst through the chest of the second guard before the man could clear his holster.

The kitchen went dead quiet, save for the rhythmic dripping of blood and wine.

Julian walked slowly toward the island, his boots crunching over broken glass. The smell of gunsmoke mingled with the sharp, lingering tang of chicken broth that had seeped into the grout months ago—a smell Julian would never, for the rest of his life, be able to forget.

Behind the island, Victoria was whimpering, pressing herself against the cabinetry, her hands raised in surrender.

"Julian... Julian, please!" she begged, tears cutting paths through the dirt on her face. "You don't understand! They made me do it! They had my brother! They threatened to kill my family! It was Sterling! It was the Board!"

Julian stood over her, the carbine hanging at his side, looking down at his wife. His face was entirely devoid of emotion. No anger. No grief. Just a vast, bottomless void.

"You poured boiling broth on a seven-year-old child," Julian said, his voice a low, terrifying whisper.

"It was an accident! I lost control—"

"You pinned her arm down," Julian interrupted softly. "Lily remembered. She told me. You held her down and you smiled."

Victoria swallowed hard, her pupils trembling. "Julian... she’s not human. Look at the data! She’s a machine, Julian! A biological weapon created in a European lab! She’s not your flesh and blood!"

Julian slowly raised his pistol, pointing it directly between Victoria’s perfectly shaped eyebrows.

"She called me Daddy," Julian said. "That makes her mine."

"Wait!"

Claire’s voice shouted from the shattered window. She sprinted into the kitchen, carrying a rugged field tablet, her breath ragged. "Julian, don't! We need her biometric signature!"

Julian didn't lower the gun. "Why?"

"The transmission was cut at ninety-six percent when the server blew," Claire said, stepping between Julian and his wife. "The vault inside Lily is destabilizing. The code is turning toxic in her neural pathways. If we don't reverse the handshake using Victoria’s terminal key within twenty minutes... Lily’s brain will suffer total cellular necrosis. She will die, Julian."

Julian’s hand didn't shake. He stared at Victoria through the iron sights.

Victoria realized she held the only card left. A hideous, trembling smirk returned to her bruised lips. "You hear that, Julian? Kill me, and your precious little freak dies screaming."
