Chapter 25 - The Woman with Claire's Eyes

"You think Victoria wanted you, Julian?" Claire sneered, stepping closer, her boots splashing through the shallow, murky water. "You think she fell in love with a grieving, broke software developer? Victoria Sterling was Arthur’s most lethal operative. Her marriage to you wasn't romance—it was corporate acquisition."

Julian stared at his wife—the woman he had idolized, mourned, and deified—feeling a sickening chasm open in the pit of his stomach. "What are you talking about? What is the Sovereign Protocol?"

Claire stopped five paces away. Under the harsh halogen lights, Julian could see the dark circles carved beneath her eyes, the twitch of hyper-vigilance in her jaw. She held a heavy tablet linked to a mobile satellite dish set up on a laboratory cart in the corner of the cistern.

"My father and Arthur spent thirty years developing cellular regeneration matrices for the Department of Defense," Claire explained, her tone devoid of maternal warmth, clinical and terrifying. "They were trying to build a biological kill-switch—a synthetic telomerase compound that could reverse trauma and thermal burns in soldier tissue instantly. But the viral vector was unstable. It caused catastrophic cellular mutation in adults. It needed an immature, rapidly dividing immune system to stabilize the genetic code."

Julian felt the blood drain from his face. "No. No, Claire, tell me you didn't."

Claire looked him dead in the eye without a flicker of remorse. "Before I staged my death, I knew Arthur was coming to raid my home lab. I had only forty-eight hours to hide the synthesized genome. There was no secure hard drive, no foreign cloud server that Arthur’s hackers couldn't breach. So I used the only biometrically encrypted vault in the world that they couldn't cut into without killing the patent."

"You used Lily," Julian whispered, horrified, his stomach heaving. "You injected our three-year-old child with an experimental bioweapon?!"

"I saved the world from my family’s monstrous monopoly!" Claire barked back, her voice suddenly cracking with a terrifying, manic intensity. "Lily is the zero-patient! Her lymphatic system produced the neutralizing antibodies! But the synthetic compound requires periodic high-stress physiological triggers to synthesize the final enzyme. Arthur figured it out."

Claire pulled up the live footage from Vance Manor’s kitchen on her tablet. The video of Victoria calmly pouring the scalding soup onto Lily’s skin played in high-definition slow motion.

"The soup wasn't torture, Julian," Claire whispered, her eyes wide, glittering with a manic, obsessive fire. "It was the trigger. Victoria was stress-testing Lily’s cellular response under extreme trauma. She burned our daughter to force her marrow to exude the harvestable peptide."

Julian stood frozen, clutching the cold steel of the Glock in his pocket, looking at the two monsters who held his daughter’s life in their hands: Victoria, who had poured boiling liquid on an innocent child—and Claire, the biological mother who had turned that child into a living petrie dish.

Suddenly, a red warning tone shrieked from Claire's satellite rig.
