Chapter 13 - The Skyscraper Siege

The Maybach tore through the neon-soaked rain of Fifth Avenue at ninety miles per hour, sirens blaring under its grille as Julian’s private convoy disregarded every traffic signal in the borough. Inside, Julian’s knuckles were bone-white as he reloaded his custom semi-automatic sidearm, his jaw locked in cold fury.

"Dr. Evans, speak to me!" Julian barked into the com-link.

"The secondary backup generators just kicked on!" Evans gasped over static. "There was a breach through the private elevator shaft! Marcus’s perimeter team intercepted two men in tactical gear outside the nursery, but... Julian, there's smoke everywhere! Flashbangs!"

"Is Leo hurt?!" Julian roared, the sheer desperation of a father cracking through his billionaire exterior.

"We don't know! I can hear gunshots on the forty-fifth floor! Dr. Evans took cover in the safe room—" The line dissolved into white noise.

Julian slammed his fist into the reinforced glass divider. "Faster, Marcus! Drive through them if you have to!"

When the Maybach screeched to a halt outside Blackwood Sovereign Tower, the street was already cordoned off by Julian’s private security. The towering sixty-story glass monolith loomed against the stormy sky, its top ten floors completely dark.

Julian didn't wait for his men. He leaped from the car, drawing his firearm, sprinting through the lobby where two guards lay unconscious on the marble tiles.

"Stun rounds," Marcus noted quickly, checking their pulses. "They didn't come to kill the staff. This is an extraction team. Highly specialized."

"They came for my son," Julian snarled, taking the fire escape stairs three at a time, moving with lethal athletic grace honed through years of military training before he ever took over the family empire.

By floor forty-five, the scent of cordite and burnt wiring hung thick in the air. The heavy oak doors of the master suite were blown off their hinges. Julian kicked the remnants aside, sweeping the room.

Two masked operatives dressed in black combat fatigues were attempting to breach the titanium vault door at the back of the child's bedroom. One looked up, reaching for a submachine gun slung across his chest.

Julian fired twice. Two clean center-mass shots. The first man collapsed instantly.

The second operative dove behind a mahogany dresser, returning fire. Bullets ripped through the drywall, showering Julian in plaster. Marcus flanked from the left, dropping the second shooter with a single suppressed round to the shoulder.

Julian kicked the downed operative’s weapon away, pinning his throat beneath a custom leather boot.

"Who sent you?" Julian demanded, pressing the barrel of his gun against the man’s forehead.

The mercenary coughed blood, laughing weakly through his tactical mask. "Look... in the room... Blackwood. It was never about taking him out of the building. It was about... putting something in."

Julian's heart stopped. He turned to the nursery vault. The heavy door slowly creaked open from the inside.

"Daddy?" a small, trembling voice whimpered.

Julian rushed forward, dropping to his knees, throwing his arms around Leo. The little boy was clutching his velvet bunny, tears streaming down his flushed cheeks, shaking violently.

"I'm here, Leo. Daddy’s here. You're safe," Julian whispered, burying his face in the child’s hair.

"Daddy," Leo whispered, pointing a trembling finger toward the antique wooden wardrobe in the corner. "The bad lady... she opened the wall. She left a clock. It's ticking."
