Chapter 16 - The Ambush on the Tappan Zee

Julian’s heart seized in his chest. He pulled his phone from his coat, tapping the direct line to the secure transport unit.
Static. Pure, dead static.
"Marcus!" Julian roared, already turning toward the exit.
"I've got the satellite tracker!" Marcus shouted, pulling out a tactical tablet as they sprinted through the executive corridor toward the private rooftop helipad. "The convoy crossed the Tappan Zee Bridge heading toward Westchester airfield. Three armored Suburbans. But the GPS beacons just dropped off the grid two miles before the toll plaza!"
Julian kicked open the heavy door leading to the helipad, where the twin-engine Sikorsky was already spinning its rotors, whipping the wet morning wind into a frenzy.
"Get us in the air now!" Julian ordered the pilot through his headset as he vaulted into the cabin, Marcus diving in right behind him.
The helicopter surged upward, cutting through the low gray clouds over Manhattan, flying north along the Hudson River at maximum velocity. Julian watched the digital telemetry map on Marcus's screen, his teeth gritted so hard a vein throbbed violently at his temple.
Ten minutes later, the massive expanse of the Gov. Mario M. Cuomo Bridge appeared below them.
Traffic was completely backed up for two miles. In the center of the northbound span, three black SUVs were pinned between two jackknifed commercial semi-trucks. Smoke poured from the engine blocks.
"Down there! Put us down on the tarmac!" Julian commanded.
"Sir, there’s no landing clearance, the bridge is packed—"
"Put it down or I will take the stick myself!" Julian snarled.
The pilot banked sharply, executing a harrowing combat descent directly onto the empty southbound lane, the downdraft blowing debris and scattering abandoned commuter cars.
Julian jumped from the helicopter before the skids even touched the asphalt, his weapon drawn. Marcus and four heavily armed contractors followed in tight tactical formation.
Julian sprinted through the smoke toward the central Suburban. The vehicle's doors were riddled with bullet impacts, but the reinforced ballistic glass had held.
"Evans!" Julian shouted, wrenching open the heavy reinforced rear door.
Dr. Evans was slumped against the leather seat, a gash across her forehead, clutching an empty first-aid kit. Beside her, two private security contractors lay unconscious, subdued by electrical shock darts.
"Julian..." Evans coughed, pointing a trembling hand toward the riverbank far below the bridge’s eastern suspension cables. "They had a winch system... tactical divers from a speed boat underneath the bridge piers. They cut through the undercarriage floorboard while we were pinned! They took him down the cables!"
Julian peered over the bridge railing.
Two hundred feet below, cutting across the choppy, dark waters of the Hudson, was an unmarked black military-grade cigarette boat, speeding southward toward the Atlantic Ocean at sixty knots.
Clutched in the arms of a diver on the stern of the boat was a tiny figure in a red winter coat, clutching a tattered velvet bunny.
"LEO!" Julian’s roar tore through the roar of the wind, raw with absolute agony and untamed fury.
The boy looked up, his tiny, terrified face visible even through the sea spray. "DADDY!"

Julian didn't hesitate. He turned to Marcus. "Get the chopper back in the air. We hunt them down. Every last one of them."
