Chapter 4 - The Threat in the Shadows

The private security monitoring room in the basement of the Blackwood mansion hummed with high-tech servers. Twelve wall-mounted flat screens displayed high-definition infrared footage of every inch of the twelve-acre estate.
Marcus stepped up to the main console, typing furiously on the mechanical keyboard. "Play the front gate footage," he ordered.
The central screen flickered, showing the black courier van that had stopped at 12:14 AM. A masked figure in a dark hoodie had stepped out, set a sleek silver aluminum briefcase beside the intercom, pressed the call button, and immediately sped off into the night.
"Where is the package?" Julian demanded, his voice dangerously low.
"Right here, Mr. Blackwood," a security guard said, carefully placing the silver case onto the metal table. "X-ray confirmed no blasting caps, no chemicals, no electronic triggers. It's safe."
Julian stepped forward and flipped the two latches. The case popped open with a heavy snap.
Inside, resting on a bed of custom black foam, was a sleek tablet device and a single, fresh white orchid—the exact flower Clara had worn in her hair on their wedding day.
The tablet screen suddenly flared to life.
A distorted, mechanically altered voice echoed through the speakers, and the screen illuminated with a video feed.
It was Victoria.
She was sitting in a dimly lit, luxurious room—clearly a penthouse suite somewhere high above the Manhattan skyline. She had already changed out of her stained designer dress into an immaculate cream silk blouse. She held a crystal glass of scotch in one hand, her face cold, arrogant, and entirely devoid of fear.
"Hello, Julian," Victoria spoke directly into the camera, her lips curling into that same venomous smirk. "I assume by now you've found my little sanctuary in the dressing room. I assume you’ve read the autopsy... and Clara’s little confession."
Julian gripped the edge of the console table so hard his knuckles turned white. "Track this IP address right now," he whispered to Marcus through gritted teeth.
"Tracing now, Boss," Marcus whispered back, fingers flying across the keys. "She's using a rotating VPN, but we're stripping the layers."
On the screen, Victoria took a slow sip of her drink.
"Did it hurt, Julian? Finding out your precious Leo isn't even your blood? Finding out Clara kept the ultimate secret from you?" Victoria laughed—a dry, chilling sound. "You were so proud of your little heir. But the truth is, Julian, you are sterile. You’ve been sterile since your cancer treatments in your early twenties. Clara knew it. The doctors told her. But she desperately needed a child to secure the Blackwood inheritance before the board of directors could trigger the family trust clause."
Julian felt like he had been struck by a sledgehammer. The room seemed to spin. Cancer treatments? He had battled leukemia at twenty-two, but his doctors had assured him his fertility was preserved.
*Unless... the doctors were paid to lie to him.*
"You see, Julian," Victoria continued, leaning closer to the lens, "you thought you were the king of this city. But you’ve been a pawn in a game that was designed before you even inherited Blackwood Global. Clara thought she could outsmart the syndicate. She thought she could hide the boy’s real origin and protect you. She paid for that mistake with her life. I personally made sure she didn't survive that drive down Whiteface Mountain."
Julian let out a guttural, furious roar, slamming his fist onto the metal table. "You murdering bitch!"
"Scream all you want, darling," Victoria sneered. "No one can hear you. Here is how this ends: You will wire five hundred million dollars to the offshore accounts listed on that tablet by noon tomorrow. Then, you will surrender legal custody of Leo to me. If you refuse... or if you go to the police... the second half of Clara’s letter will be released to the press, the SEC, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Along with documents proving that *you* ordered the hit on Clara to cover up your financial crimes."
"I will find you, Victoria," Julian said, his voice deadly and shaking with volcanic fury. "And when I do, not even your money or your syndicate will save you."
"You won't find me, Julian," Victoria smiled, her eyes turning into razor blades. "Because by noon tomorrow, you won't even have your company. Look outside your window."
The video screen abruptly cut to black.
At that exact second, the power inside the Blackwood Estate went completely dead.
Every light, every computer screen, every server shut down simultaneously. The estate was plunged into total, pitch-black darkness.
A high-pitched screech of an electromagnetic pulse echoed through the walls, followed immediately by the shattering of glass on the second floor.
The nursery.

"LEO!" Julian screamed into the darkness.
