Chapter 8 - The Wolf at the Gates

A blizzard began to descend upon the Adirondacks, thick sheets of heavy snow blanketing the pine forest, masking the footprints of the two men moving through the wilderness.

Julian carried Leo inside his heavy wool-lined tactical jacket, keeping the boy warm against his own body heat. Marcus moved three paces ahead, using thermal optics to scan for perimeter tripwires and infrared surveillance cameras scattered throughout the Sterling estate's private forest.

"Perimeter fence ahead," Marcus whispered, dropping to one knee behind a boulder. "Twelve-foot electrified chain-link with seismic sensors."

Julian stepped up beside him. Through the falling snow, the Sterling estate looked like an impenetrable castle. Built of gray granite and steel, perched on the edge of a sheer cliff overlooking the frozen waters of Lake Placid, it boasted floodlights, roving patrols with German Shepherds, and reinforced steel gates.

"How do we breach?" Marcus asked.

Julian pulled out the encrypted burner phone he had recovered from Victoria’s vault back in Connecticut. "Victoria was arrogant. She kept a digital backup of the estate’s master security schematic on this phone."

Julian tapped the screen, entering the bypass codes he had memorized on the helicopter ride.

Fifty yards to their left, a small section of the perimeter fence clicked softly. The high-voltage hum died, and the infrared sensors in Sector 4 looped into a pre-recorded forty-second maintenance cycle.

"Move," Julian ordered.

Using tactical wire cutters, Marcus sheared through the chain links in seconds. They slipped through the breach like ghosts, melting into the shadows of the estate's landscaped terraces.

Inside the grand dining room of the Sterling fortress, an arrogant celebration was already underway.

Victoria Sterling stood by a roaring stone fireplace, holding a flute of vintage champagne. Seated at the head of a twenty-foot mahogany dining table was Harold Sterling—a seventy-year-old patriarch with slicked-back silver hair, cold reptilian eyes, and a bespoke three-piece Savile Row suit.

"The crash has been confirmed by the recovery chopper," Harold said smoothly, slicing into a rare wagyu steak. "The Blackwood helicopter exploded on impact in the ravine. No human could have survived that drop."

Victoria took a triumphant sip of champagne, her face glowing with twisted satisfaction. "It’s finally over. Tomorrow morning, I file the emergency probate claim. With Julian dead and Leo perished in the crash, Arthur’s estate dissolves into the primary family trust. Blackwood Global falls into our receivership by Friday."

"A messy afternoon at that garden party, Victoria," Harold scolded mildly, though a smirk played on his lips. "Shoving the boy into the cake in front of two hundred people was undignified."

"It was poetic," Victoria sneered, her eyes gleaming with malice. "The boy was an abomination. An artificial bastard Clara engineered to rob me of my birthright. He deserved far worse than a face full of frosting. I wanted to see him choke on it."

"Well," Harold raised his glass toward her. "To the restoration of the Sterling name. And the absolute destruction of Julian Blackwood."

Victoria smiled, lifting her flute.

*CRASH!*

The floor-to-ceiling bay windows of the dining room exploded in a deafening shower of shattered glass.

A high-velocity flashbang grenade rolled across the oriental rug, detonating with a blinding flash of white light and an ear-splitting bang that sent Victoria and Harold screaming to the floor, hands over their ears.

Before the smoke could even clear, Julian Blackwood stepped through the shattered window frame.

He didn't look like a civilized billionaire anymore. His clothes were torn and snow-dusted, blood was crusted on his cheek, and in his right hand was a combat shotgun. He stepped into the room with the terrifying calm of an executioner.

Two armed Sterling bodyguards stationed at the dining room doors lunged forward, reaching for their holstered weapons.

*BOOM! BOOM!*

Julian fired twice. Heavy 12-gauge beanbag and breaching rounds struck both guards in the chest with the force of a freight train, launching them backward against the stone walls, knocking them unconscious instantly.

Victoria scrambled backward across the rug on her hands and knees, shrieking in utter terror as she looked up into the eyes of the man who had supposedly burned in a helicopter crash minutes prior.

"JULIAN?!" she screamed, her voice cracking in hysterical disbelief. "NO! YOU’RE DEAD! YOU DIED IN THE RAVINE!"

Julian pumped the shotgun with a lethal mechanical sound, stepping directly up to the dining table.

Behind him, Marcus stepped through the shattered glass, carrying Leo securely in his arms, his carbine covering the hallway entrance.

Julian rested the smoking barrel of the shotgun directly beneath Harold Sterling’s chin.

The seventy-year-old patriarch froze, his knife and fork slipping from his trembling fingers, clattering loudly against his porcelain plate. The arrogance on Harold's face vanished, replaced by the sickening realization that death was staring him in the face.

"Good evening, Uncle Harold," Julian whispered, his voice smooth, terrifying, and dripping with venom. "I believe you have something that belongs to my son."
