Chapter 14 - The Countdown in the Dark

Julian’s blood turned to liquid nitrogen. He pushed Leo gently behind Marcus. "Take him down to the armored transport immediately. Go!"
"Julian, no! We clear out together!" Marcus insisted.
"Get my son out of this tower, Marcus! That is an order!" Julian roared.
Marcus snatched Leo into his arms, shielding the boy’s head with his broad chest, and sprinted down the emergency stairwell with Dr. Evans and four armed guards forming a human shield around them.
Julian turned slowly toward the antique wardrobe. The false backing of the wood had been pried open, revealing a hidden crawlspace between the building's structural concrete pillars. Sitting inside was not an explosive device—it was an electronic military-grade data transmitter, its digital screen blinking furiously with a red countdown:
*00:04:12... 00:04:11...*
Julian approached it, his sharp intellect analyzing the cables instantly. It wasn't dynamite. It was an EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) relay designed to fry the server banks beneath the tower while broadcasting an encrypted signal outward. Above the countdown screen was a high-resolution holographic projector.
As Julian took a step forward, the projector activated with a soft hum.
The three-dimensional image of a man flickered to life in the dim, smoke-filled bedroom. He was an older man, in his late fifties, with piercing gray eyes, silver-streaked hair, and a ruthless smirk that Julian recognized instantly from the elite boardrooms of Zurich and London.
Archibald Sterling.
The patriarch of the Sterling empire. The man who had supposedly died in a plane crash off the coast of Mallorca five years ago.
"Good evening, Julian," Archibald’s pre-recorded hologram spoke, his voice crisp and smooth like crushed glass. "If you are seeing this, my retrieval team failed, but my transmission was successful. Did you really believe my daughters were the masters of this game? Victoria was an arrogant pawn. Vivienne is merely a noisy distraction."
Julian stood frozen, staring at the ghost of his fiercest corporate rival.
"That boy in your arms carries something far more valuable than the Blackwood name," Archibald’s projection continued, stepping forward in the digital space. "Clara didn't steal him from an orphanage, Julian. And she didn't conceive him with some nameless lover. She hid him from me. Because Leo is the sole legitimate heir to the Sterling Sovereign Trust—the three-hundred-billion-dollar energy monopoly that belongs to my bloodline."
The countdown reached *00:01:30*.
"You fought to make him a Blackwood," Archibald sneered. "You gave him your name, your court rulings, your pride. But his blood belongs to me. And now that the global registry has received his biological telemetry from that very room, the world knows who he really is. Come find me in Monaco, Julian. Bring my grandson. Or watch every asset you own be seized by international maritime law."
The projector flickered out.
The transmitter emitted a sharp, final beep, and then went completely dead.
