Chapter 2 - The Lion Awakens

Julian Blackwood crossed the sixty feet of lawn in less than four seconds. The aristocratic composure that usually defined the venture capitalist vanished, replaced by the lethal instinct of a father protecting his bloodline.

Before Victoria could push the child down a third time, Julian’s hand clamped around her slender wrist like a vice forged in iron.

Victoria gasped, the bones of her arm grinding under Julian’s tremendous grip. She spun around, terror flashing across her porcelain features as she saw her husband’s face. Julian didn't look like the cultured, calculating businessman she had married eighteen months ago. His veins pulsed along his neck, his jaw was clamped shut like a steel trap, and his hazel eyes burned with a cold, terrifying vengeance.

"Julian—" she choked out, her voice suddenly trembling.

Julian didn't answer with words. With a single, controlled thrust of his arm, he shoved Victoria backward. She stumbled over her designer heels, her back slamming hard against the brick garden wall, scraping her exposed shoulders.

Dropping instantly to his knees, Julian reached into the sea of mashed sponge and sticky icing. His large hands swept away the raspberry jam that looked horribly like blood across his son's forehead. Leo was hyperventilating, choking on thick sugar, coughing wildly as his tiny hands clawed at his stinging eyes.

"I’ve got you, Leo. Daddy’s here. I’ve got you, baby," Julian whispered, his deep voice trembling with raw heartbreak.

He pulled the shivering, two-year-old toddler into his chest, entirely indifferent to the fact that the greasy frosting, jam, and cake debris completely ruined his ten-thousand-dollar Brioni suit. He cradled Leo’s head against his shoulder, rocking him, using his linen pocket square to carefully wipe the child’s mouth, nose, and eyes so he could draw clean air. Leo buried his sticky face into Julian’s neck, wailing until his vocal cords cracked.

Martha, the nanny, sprinted through the frozen crowd, her face pale with tears. "Mr. Blackwood! Oh, God, Mr. Blackwood!"

"Take him inside," Julian commanded, his voice deadly quiet, devoid of any warmth. "Clean him up. Call Dr. Evans immediately. If there is a single scratch, a single concussion symptom, I want an ambulance on this lawn in ten minutes. Move."

Martha received the shivering toddler gently and carried him away toward the manor house, running as fast as her legs could carry her.

Only when the heavy mahogany doors of the mansion clicked shut did Julian slowly rise to his feet.

The silence on the terrace was deafening. The two hundred elites of New York society stood like statues, clutching their drinks, eyes darting between Julian and his disgraced wife.

Victoria pushed herself up from the brick wall, frantically smoothing her stained dress, desperately attempting to piece her dignified facade back together. She let out a high-pitched, manic laugh that rang hollow in the warm air.

"Julian, darling... please, you misunderstand," she stammered, holding up her hands. "It was an accident! He slipped. Leo ran toward the table, and he pulled the cloth! I was merely trying to catch him, and I lost my footing—"

Julian took three deliberate, heavy steps toward her. The air between them dropped twenty degrees.

"DON'T EVER TOUCH MY SON!" he roared.

The decibel of his voice cracked across the manicured lawns, echoing off the stone walls of the mansion. Several women in the crowd flinched back in fear. Victoria stepped back, her heel catching the edge of a rosebush, her eyes widening as she realized Julian was completely immune to her lies.

Julian leaned down until his face was inches from hers. His voice lowered into a gravelly, lethal whisper that sent shivers straight to Victoria’s spine: "I saw you, Victoria. I stood right there. I watched your hands. I heard what you said."

Victoria swallowed hard, her throat dry. The mask of innocence slipped away, knowing she was trapped. Her eyes narrowed, the frightened victim transforming back into a calculating viper. She leaned in, abandoning all pretense, her lips curving into a grotesque, mocking smirk just millimeters from his ear.

"You think you’re a god, Julian," she whispered so quietly that only he could hear. "You think you can play the noble father. But you have no idea what is already in motion. You throw me out of this house, and you will lose everything. Not just your reputation. Not just your money. *Leo’s life will belong to me.* Don't push me, Julian. You haven't seen what I’ve buried beneath your feet."

Julian stared at her, unwavering, his jaw clenched so hard his teeth felt ready to splinter. "Get off my property. Now. Before I have security drag you through the gates in zip-ties."

Victoria straightened her back, smoothed her blonde hair, and looked at the horrified crowd with cold arrogance. She picked up her designer clutch from a nearby chair, turned on her red-soled Louboutins, and marched toward the grand iron gates without looking back.

Julian stood amidst the ruined cake and broken glass, his fists clenched at his sides. Victoria's parting whisper rattled through his mind like a siren.

*You haven't seen what I’ve buried beneath your feet.*

Julian turned to his head of private security, Marcus Vance, who was already waiting at his flank.

"Marcus," Julian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "I want her phones tapped, her bank accounts audited, and every square inch of her private quarters turned upside down. Find out what she meant. And do not let her leave the state."
