Chapter 5 - The Ambush at Midnight

Adrenaline flooded Julian’s veins like liquid fire. In the pitch blackness of the basement, his military instincts took over before thought could even register.
"Night vision! Now!" Marcus barked.
The green glow of tactical goggles flickered to life. Julian didn't wait. He drew his concealed Glock 19 from his shoulder holster, racked the slide with a sharp metallic clack, and sprinted blindly up the concrete basement stairs.
Behind him, the emergency backup generators sputtered, coughing to life with a low, mechanical growl. Dim red emergency lights flickered along the corridors, casting long, blood-red shadows across the polished hardwood floors.
The sound of gunfire shattered the silence of the mansion.
*Crack! Crack! Crack!*
Subsonic, suppressed rounds tore through the grand entrance hall. Julian hit the floor at the top of the stairs, rolling behind a marble pillar just as a spray of 9mm bullets splintered the mahogany wall inches above his head.
Four operators dressed in matte-black tactical gear, wearing balaclavas and advanced night-vision optics, were advancing up the dual curved staircases toward the second floor. They moved with absolute military precision. These weren't street thugs or low-level mercenaries. This was an elite corporate extraction unit.
"Upstairs! They’re going for the nursery!" Julian shouted, leaning around the marble pillar.
He acquired his first target—a mercenary moving up the eastern staircase—and squeezed the trigger twice.
*Bang! Bang!*
Two center-mass hits collapsed the operative instantly, his body tumbling back down the stairs. The remaining three mercenaries immediately redirected their fire, pinning Julian down beneath an onslaught of suppressed fire. Plaster dust exploded into the air, raining down like white snow.
From behind Julian, Marcus and two estate security guards surged forward, returning heavy fire with tactical carbines.
"Boss! Go! We hold the hall!" Marcus roared over the deafening clatter of gunshots.
Julian didn't hesitate. He broke from cover, scrambling through the service corridor that connected the south wing to the nursery. His heart pounded in his ears like a war drum.
*Not Leo. Not Clara’s boy. Never.*
Julian kicked open the door to the nursery wing.
The heavy oak door to Leo’s bedroom had been kicked off its hinges. Inside, Martha the nanny lay crumpled against the wall, unconscious, blood trickling from a blunt-force wound to her temple.
Standing over Leo’s crib was a fifth operative.
The man had already hoisted the crying, terrified toddler into one arm, zipping him into a heavy-duty tactical carry bag, while his free hand reached for his sidearm.
"DROP HIM!" Julian roared.
The operative turned, raising his weapon with blinding speed. Julian fired first.
A single 9mm hollow-point round took the operative through the shoulder. The man grunted, dropping his gun, but instead of retreating, he lunged forward, drawing a serrated combat knife from his chest rig and slashing violently toward Julian’s throat.
Julian dodged to the left, the cold steel slicing a clean line across his cheekbone. Ignoring the searing pain, Julian closed the distance, slamming the heel of his palm upward into the attacker’s nose. Cartilage crunched. The operative stumbled back, swinging the blade wildly. Julian grabbed the man's wrist, twisted it violently until the bone snapped, and drove his knee into the operative’s sternum.
The man hit the floor, gasping for breath. Julian pinned him down with a heavy knee to his neck, pressing the smoking barrel of his Glock directly between the mercenary’s eyes.
"Who sent you?" Julian hissed, blood dripping from his cut cheek onto the man’s tactical mask. "Tell me, or your brains decorate this wall!"
The mercenary spat blood, his eyes narrowing with a defiant sneer. "It’s... it’s already done, Blackwood. The Sterling Syndicate... owns you."
Julian didn't hesitate. He whipped the butt of his pistol across the man's temple, knocking him instantly unconscious.
Julian immediately scrambled to the crib.
Leo was curled inside the tactical bag, sobbing hysterically, his tiny face red and covered in tears, his little arms reaching out desperately. "Daddy! Daddy!"
Julian pulled his son out, wrapping his arms around the boy so tightly he could feel the child’s racing heartbeat against his own chest. "I’m here, Leo. Daddy’s got you. You’re safe. You’re safe, my brave boy."
Leo buried his face into Julian’s bloody shoulder, clutching his velvet bunny with white-knuckled desperation.
Marcus ran into the room, carbine raised, his face slick with sweat and grime. "Hallway is clear. Two dead, two captured. The perimeter is secure for now, Boss. But local police are five minutes out. We have a five-alarm emergency."
"No police," Julian said, his voice flat, razor-sharp, and deadly.
Marcus paused, looking at him. "Sir?"
"Victoria’s uncle is Harold Sterling. He controls the regional judiciary, and half the state troopers in this district are on his payroll," Julian said, standing up with Leo clutched in his left arm. "If the police take custody of Leo under Victoria’s emergency injunction, we will never see him again."
Julian looked down at the unconscious mercenary on the floor.
