Chapter 6 - The Broken Lineage

Two hours before dawn, an unmarked black helicopter lifted off from a private helipad in the rolling hills of rural Connecticut, banking sharply west toward the Adirondack Mountains.
Inside the cabin, the noise of the rotor blades was muted by noise-canceling headsets. Leo had finally collapsed into an exhausted sleep on the leather bench, wrapped in Julian’s cashmere coat. Julian sat opposite him, holding a cold ice pack to the cut on his cheek while Marcus patched a secure satellite uplink into a ruggedized laptop.
Julian looked down at the DNA test and Clara’s torn letter resting on his knees.
The truth gnawed at his soul like acid.
For two years, he had believed Leo was his flesh and blood. He remembered holding Clara’s hand in the delivery room, weeping tears of joy when the doctor placed the squirming, dark-haired infant onto Clara’s chest. He remembered every sleepless night, every fever he had soothed, every time the little boy had smiled up at him with those bright violet-gray eyes.
*Leo isn't your biological son.* Victoria’s venomous words replayed endlessly in his head.
"Marcus," Julian said quietly into his headset microphone.
Marcus glanced up from the screen. "Yes, Boss?"
"Did you know about Clara’s visits to the clinic upstate?"
Marcus hesitated. The seasoned operative lowered his eyes, a flicker of guilt crossing his weathered face. "I didn't know the specifics, Julian. Clara was brilliant. She knew how to evade surveillance when she wanted to. But... about three weeks before the accident, she came to me in private. She didn't give me names, but she told me that if anything ever happened to her, I was never to let Victoria near Leo. She said Victoria was a plant."
"A plant?" Julian leaned forward, his eyes burning.
"An operative installed by the Sterling Family Trust," Marcus explained, pulling up a series of financial flowcharts on the laptop screen. "Look at this. Eighteen months ago, Blackwood Global was preparing to acquire the Hudson Port Authority—a seven-billion-dollar infrastructure deal. The only competitor was Sterling Maritime, owned by Victoria’s family."
Julian’s eyes narrowed. "They were going bankrupt. We undercut their bid."
"Exactly," Marcus said. "Sterling Maritime was on the brink of total liquidation. But then Clara died. Six months later, you were grieving, isolated, and drinking heavily. That was when Victoria Sterling entered your life at a charity gala in the Hamptons. She comforted you. She played the compassionate, sophisticated partner. You married her within eight months."
"A corporate Trojan Horse," Julian whispered, the bitter realization tasting like ash in his mouth. "They couldn't beat me in the boardroom, so they sent a woman to infiltrate my bedroom, poison my life, and legally strip me of my empire through marriage and custody."
"It's worse than that," Marcus said, tapping the touchpad to pull up the encrypted records found in the mercenary's tactical vest. "We cracked the comms unit from the mercenary you knocked out. The order wasn't just to kidnap Leo. The order was to bring Leo to the Sterling Family compound on Lake Placid. They need Leo alive."
Julian frowned. "Why? If Victoria wanted him out of the picture, why kidnap him instead of killing him?"
"Because of Leo’s real father," Marcus replied grimly.
Julian felt the cabin air suddenly grow thin. "What are you talking about?"
Marcus opened a sealed medical file on the screen. It was an extraction from the private clinic where Clara had secretly undergone in-vitro fertilization.
"Clara never had an affair, Julian," Marcus revealed, his voice filled with deep reverence. "She never betrayed your marriage vows. She loved you with every fiber of her being."
Julian’s breath hitched. "Then whose DNA is this?"
"Look at the genetic profile," Marcus pointed to the screen. "Leo’s biological father wasn't an anonymous donor. The donor was Arthur Sterling."
Julian froze. "Arthur Sterling? Victoria’s older brother? The one who died in a helicopter crash five years ago?"
"Arthur was the rightful heir to the entire Sterling multi-billion-dollar dynasty," Marcus said. "Before he died, he discovered his family’s corrupt syndicate. He altered his trust: if he died without direct biological heirs, ninety percent of the Sterling fortune would revert to public charity. But if he had a child... that child would inherit everything, completely locking Victoria and her corrupt uncle out of the family empire forever."
Julian looked over at the sleeping toddler.
The puzzle pieces snapped together with terrifying clarity.
Clara had discovered the truth. She had somehow acquired Arthur’s preserved genetic material through a covert legal trust to create Leo—not to betray Julian, but to forge an unstoppable weapon that would permanently bankrupt and destroy the Sterling syndicate from within.
Leo wasn't just Julian’s son by love and choice.
Leo was the sole legal owner of the entire Sterling empire.
And Victoria had shoved him into a birthday cake because she knew that the moment Leo reached his third birthday, the trust would activate, and she would be stripped of every penny she had ever stolen.
Julian felt a tear slip down his cheek, burning against the open cut on his skin. He reached over and gently took Leo’s tiny, sleeping hand in his.
"He may not have my blood," Julian whispered fiercely, his voice vibrating with absolute, unyielding devotion. "But he is my son. And I will burn the world to the ground before I let them touch him."

"Boss," the helicopter pilot called over the radio. "Approaching Adirondack airspace. Radar indicates an unidentified military chopper tracking us on our vector. They’re closing fast."
