Chapter 3 - The Secret Vault

By midnight, the Blackwood Estate had transformed into an armed garrison.

Floodlights illuminated the limestone perimeter walls. Two blacked-out SUVs belonging to Julian’s private security detail were parked outside the main gate, watching every exit. The laughter and champagne of the afternoon were replaced by the clinical whir of computer drives and the low murmur of men speaking into encrypted radios.

In the nursery on the second floor, Julian sat beside Leo’s crib.

Dr. Evans had thoroughly examined the boy. Aside from mild bruising on his ribs where Victoria’s fingers had dug in, and severe emotional shock, Leo was physically intact. He was finally asleep, clutching his tattered velvet bunny, breathing rhythmically, though his little chest hitched occasionally with lingering sobs. Julian gently stroked Leo’s soft hair, his eyes heavy with an unbearable weight of guilt.

*Clara,* Julian thought, his chest aching with a phantom pain. *I promised you I would protect him. I brought a monster into our home.*

A soft knock came at the nursery door. Marcus Vance, a six-foot-four former Delta Force operative with a salt-and-pepper buzz cut, stepped inside. He bowed his head respectfully toward the sleeping child before nodding to Julian.

"We found something, Boss," Marcus whispered. "In her private dressing suite. You need to see this."

Julian kissed Leo’s forehead, pulled the cashmere blanket up to the boy's chin, and silently exited into the dimly lit corridor. He followed Marcus down the north wing toward Victoria’s master walk-in wardrobe—a room the size of a luxury Manhattan boutique, lined with hundreds of designer shoes, fur coats, and mirrored vanity mirrors.

Two forensic technicians from Marcus's team were standing near the rear of the wardrobe. The cedar back panel of a shoe carousel had been systematically dismantled, revealing a wall-mounted electronic biometric safe that had been expertly hidden behind the false carpentry.

"She had this installed six months ago," Marcus explained, shining a tactical flashlight onto the keypad. "Bypassed the estate’s central security registry. Hired an independent locksmith from South Boston."

"Can you crack it?" Julian asked, his voice laced with cold urgency.

"Already did. Bypassed the secondary motherboard with a brute-force decryption unit," Marcus said, gesturing to the safe’s heavy chrome handle.

Julian reached out, seized the handle, and pulled. The heavy door swung open on oiled hinges with a silent, ominous click.

Inside lay three thick, unmarked leather binders, a burner smartphone, a small glass vial filled with a clear, viscous liquid, and a stack of legal documents tied with red twine.

Julian picked up the legal documents first. As his eyes skimmed the bold headings, the blood drained from his face.

It was a complete petition for the emergency termination of Julian’s parental rights, filed in a remote county court upstate where the presiding judge was Victoria’s uncle, Harold Sterling. The documents alleged extreme domestic violence, substance abuse, and psychological instability against Julian Blackwood. Every single page contained fabricated incident reports, complete with forged medical affidavits and photoshopped images of Victoria sporting violent contusions and black eyes.

"She was preparing a legal guillotine," Julian muttered, his knuckles turning white. "She didn't just want a divorce. She wanted full legal custody of Leo. But why? Leo isn't her son. A court would never grant a stepmother custody over a biological father without—"

"Boss," Marcus interrupted gravely. "Look at the medical reports under the red folder."

Julian set the custody papers aside and opened the manila folder beneath them. Inside was an official medical analysis from a private pathology lab in Zurich, dated fourteen months prior—shortly before Clara’s fatal car crash.

Attached to the file was an autopsy addendum for Clara Blackwood.

Julian’s heart seized. The official police report had ruled Clara’s death an accident: she had lost control of her vehicle on a rain-slicked mountain road in the Adirondacks, plunging off an embankment.

Julian read the private pathologist's notes, his eyes vibrating with horror:

*Test Subject: Clara Blackwood. Post-mortem tissue sample analysis indicates lethal concentrations of Succinylcholine—a powerful, odorless paralytic agent that metabolizes rapidly, mimicking cardiovascular collapse or sudden muscle paralysis.*

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat. His entire body began to tremble. Succinylcholine caused total paralysis while the victim remained fully conscious. If Clara had been dosed with it while driving... she wouldn't have been able to steer. She wouldn't have been able to hit the brakes. She would have watched the car plunge over the cliff, completely unable to scream or move a single muscle.

Julian looked down at the safe. His eyes locked onto the small, unlabeled glass vial sitting next to the burner phone.

"She didn't just push my son into a cake today," Julian said, his voice dropping into a hollow, terrifying abyss. "She murdered my wife."

"Julian, look at this," Marcus whispered, his face grim as he pulled a secondary envelope from behind the binders.

The envelope bore the official seal of the New York State Department of Vital Statistics. Julian ripped it open with shaking hands.

Inside was an authentic, sealed DNA paternity test for Leo Blackwood, alongside a certified copy of a birth registry from an anonymous private clinic in upstate New York.

Julian read the names on the paper.

*Child: Leo Blackwood.*

*Biological Mother: Clara Blackwood.*

*Biological Father: Unknown / Excluded.*

*Genetic Match to Julian Blackwood: 0.00%.*

Julian’s world tilted on its axis. He stumbled back, his spine slamming against the mirrored wall of the dressing room, the paper fluttering in his trembling fingers.

"No..." Julian gasped, clutching his chest. "No, this is impossible. Leo is my son! Clara loved me! This is a lie... another one of Victoria's sick games!"

Marcus looked at Julian with profound sorrow. "Turn to page three, Boss."

Julian flipped the page with numb fingers. Attached was a handwritten note in Clara’s unmistakable cursive script, addressed directly to Julian. The paper was dated three days before she died.

The note read:

*My dearest Julian,*

*If you are reading this, I am already gone, and Victoria has made her move. You must listen to me carefully. Leo’s life depends on it. He is not your biological son, but he is the only key to exposing the syndicate that is trying to destroy you. Victoria is not working alone. She is—*

The rest of the letter had been ripped away. The bottom half was missing.

Before Julian could process the earth-shattering revelation, Marcus’s tactical earpiece buzzed with static.

"Sir! Perimeter Breach!" the head of gate security barked through the radio. "Front gates just received a delivery. A black courier van dropped a package and sped off. We swept it for explosives—it’s clear. But you need to see what’s on the camera feed right now!"

May you like

Julian shoved the documents into his jacket, his chest burning with raw adrenaline, and sprinted down the grand stairs toward the command security center.
