Chapter 17 - The Ghost of Blackwood Sanitarium

The rain turned to sleet as Daniel’s convoy of three armored SUVs tore up the winding, unpaved road through the Adirondack wilderness.

Clara and Leo had been placed under federal protective custody at an undisclosed naval base in Rhode Island, secured by agents personally appointed by the Director of the FBI. Daniel, Hannah, and Marcus were alone in the lead vehicle, weapons loaded, heading toward the coordinates extracted from Judge Miller’s encrypted phone.

Blackwood Sanitarium was not a hospital; it was a gothic fortress of rusted iron and gray slate, hidden deep within a valley where cell service died ten miles back. Built in the 1920s as a private asylum for the disgraced heirs of the Gilded Age, it had been purchased twenty years ago by Vance Pharmaceuticals under a shell corporation.

The front wrought-iron gates were already smashed open, their chains sheared by heavy bolt cutters.

"Stay tight," Marcus whispered, chambering a round in his custom SIG Sauer carbine. "Thermal scopes show movement on the third floor. No perimeter guards. Something went wrong here before we arrived."

Daniel racked the slide of his shotgun, his jaw set in stone. Hannah carried a medical trauma kit and a compact Glock Daniel had taught her to fire three days ago.

They slipped through the heavy oak front doors. The grand entrance hall smelled of mildew, stagnant water, and ozone. Old medical charts were strewn across the checkerboard floor like dead leaves.

"Listen," Hannah whispered, freezing.

Faint, distant music was echoing down the cavernous corridor. It was Debussy’s *Clair de Lune*—the exact lullaby Eleanor used to play on the piano when she put Clara down to sleep as an infant.

Daniel moved like a phantom, guided by the music up the spiral marble staircase to the third-floor west wing.

Room 314 was marked with a weathered brass plaque: *RESTRICTED — MEDICAL RESEARCH SUBJECT 09.*

Daniel kicked the door open.

The room was clean, glaringly sterile, lit by humming fluorescent tubes. On an adjustable hospital bed, surrounded by monitors that beeped in a slow, rhythmic cadence, lay a woman.

Her face was gaunt, her skin translucent, her long auburn hair spilling across the pillow like spun copper. Her wrists were secured to the bedrails with soft leather restraints. An IV drip was steadily pumping a clear, amber fluid into her vein.

Daniel dropped his weapon to his side. The breath left his lungs in a ragged gasp.

"Eleanor..."

The woman’s eyelids fluttered. She turned her head slowly, her hazel eyes clouded with heavy sedation, fighting through layers of chemical fog. She looked at Daniel, her cracked lips parting in a dry, disbelieving whisper.

"Daniel...? Are you... a ghost too?"

Daniel threw himself across the bed, his hands framing her cold, trembling face, tears blinding him. "No, El. I’m here. I’m here. It’s Daniel. You’re alive. My God, you’re alive."

"Clara..." Eleanor whimpered, her eyes searching wildly. "They took my baby... Arthur said she was dead... Victoria said you drowned her..."

"Clara is safe! She’s alive! She’s waiting for us!" Daniel cried, ripping the leather restraints from Eleanor’s wrists.

Suddenly, Hannah shouted from the doorway: "DANIEL, MOVE!"
