Chapter 20 - The Voice Behind the Mirror

Three days later, the storm had passed, leaving behind a sky of crisp, crystalline blue over the Bedford estate.

The nightmare seemed, at long last, conclusively defeated. Arthur Vance was being held without bail in a federal supermax facility on treason, kidnapping, and biological conspiracy charges. Victoria was locked in a psychiatric prison ward under round-the-clock suicide watch.

In the sunlit master suite, Eleanor was resting comfortably in a plush chaise lounge, wrapped in a cashmere blanket. Her recovery would take months, but her vital signs were stable, and the poison was being flushed from her system.

Down on the lawn, Clara was running through the falling leaves, Leo right behind her, their laughter ringing like wind chimes through the valley. Hannah stood near the terrace steps, watching over them with a warm, triumphant smile.

Daniel walked up behind Hannah, handing her a steaming mug of coffee. "The foundation charter cleared the state attorney general's office this morning. The pediatric clinical trial Eleanor designed will be entirely non-profit, funded by Vale Enterprises. It will save thousands of children. Just like Leo."

Hannah took the mug, looking out over the children. "And Eleanor? How is she doing?"

"She talked to Clara for an hour today," Daniel said, his voice thick with emotion. "Clara gave her the blue stone. She told Eleanor that the water didn't hurt anymore."

Hannah smiled, her eyes glistening. "Then it’s really over. You have your family back, Daniel."

"You are part of this family, Hannah," Daniel said gently, meeting her gaze. "Always."

The grandfather clock in the main gallery chimed five times. The sun began to dip below the western ridge, painting the sky in deep streaks of violet and blood orange.

"Daddy!" Clara’s voice called from the ground-floor conservatory.

Daniel frowned slightly. "Marcus, did you let Clara into the conservatory alone?"

"No, sir," Marcus’s voice crackled through the earpiece. "I thought she was with Nurse Hannah on the lawn."

Daniel and Hannah turned immediately. The lawn was empty; Leo was sitting on the bottom step tying his shoe, but Clara was nowhere to be seen.

"Clara?" Daniel called out, his heart suddenly accelerating, that familiar, icy knot of dread tightening in his stomach.

He rushed through the glass French doors into the conservatory—a lush, glass-enclosed botanical wing filled with exotic orchids and towering palms. In the center of the room stood an antique, floor-to-ceiling gilded mirror that had belonged to the estate for over a century.

Clara was standing directly in front of the mirror, her tiny forehead pressed against the cold glass. Her reflection was dark, obscured by the twilight shadows.

"Clara, sweetheart, what are you doing?" Daniel asked softly, approaching her with cautious steps, signaling Hannah to stay back.

Clara didn't turn around. She raised her tiny index finger and pointed directly at her own reflection in the glass.

"She’s pretty, Daddy," Clara whispered, her voice sounding strangely flat, echoing within the glass room.

Daniel’s blood froze. "Who is pretty, Clara?"

"The other mommy," Clara said, turning her head slowly to look at Daniel. Her eyes were wide, vacant, and completely dark. "The mommy who didn't come out of the hospital."

From behind the heavy antique glass of the mirror, a soft, deliberate tapping sounded.

*TAP. TAP. TAP.*

Daniel froze.

In the darkened depth behind Clara’s reflection, a figure slowly stepped forward from the shadows within the glass.

It was a woman. She possessed the exact, identical face of Eleanor—the same auburn hair, the same hazel eyes, the same cheekbones. But across her throat was a jagged, surgical scar. And in her hand, she held the master key to every door in the Bedford mansion.

She smiled through the two-way glass, tapped the surface one more time, and mouthed a single, silent sentence to Daniel:

May you like

*“You brought the wrong one home.”*

A split second later, every light in the Bedford estate blew out simultaneously, plunging the house into pitch-black silence—followed by the heavy click of the conservatory door locking from the outside.
