Chapter 27 - The Identity Heist

"Wait!"

Hannah's voice rang out through the drafty clocktower, loud, clear, and commanding.

Evelyn’s eyes flickered toward Hannah with a sneer. "Shut up, little maid. You die second."

"You think Eleanor stole your life?" Hannah said, her voice completely steady, stepping out from behind Daniel. She held up her smartphone, its screen displaying an open encrypted email file. "Look at this, Evelyn. Look at what was in your father's private vault!"

Evelyn's brow furrowed in rage. "Lies! Eleanor fabricated everything!"

"No, she didn't," Hannah said, taking a deliberate step closer, holding Evelyn’s gaze. "Your father didn't leave the estate to you, Evelyn. And he didn't leave it to Eleanor either. Your father was bankrupt five years ago. He was an embezzler facing twenty years in federal prison!"

Daniel stared at Hannah, stunned. "Hannah, what are you talking about?"

"The money Daniel married into didn't belong to the Vales," Hannah revealed, her voice echoing over the clanking gears. "Eleanor found out that your father had stolen over forty million dollars from pension funds. To save the family from public disgrace, your father planned to frame one of his daughters and send her away as a scapegoat. Evelyn... it wasn't Eleanor who put you in Blackwood Sanitarium."

Evelyn froze, the barrel of the shotgun trembling slightly in her hands. "You're lying... my father loved me!"

"Your father signed the commitment papers himself," Hannah continued relentlessly, reading directly from the scanned legal documents. *"I, Arthur Vale, hereby certify that my daughter Evelyn Vale is a danger to herself and society...'* Eleanor tried to stop him, Evelyn! Eleanor took Daniel’s money to pay off your father’s debts to keep you out of a state penitentiary!"

"LIES!" Evelyn shrieked, tears of raw, hysterical fury mixing with the blood on her forehead. "She stole him from me! She took my clothes, my voice, my entire existence!"

"Eleanor was terrified of you!" Daniel shouted, stepping closer, seeing Evelyn’s composure fracturing. "She never pushed Clara to hurt her! You pushed Clara to destroy Eleanor! Eleanor stayed in that marriage because she knew that if she left, you would track her down! She was protecting Clara from you!"

*CLACK. CLACK. CLACK.*

The massive iron gears of the tower clock groaned as the hands clicked to 11:58 PM.

The heavy counterweight began to drop. The iron chain wrapped around the safe room’s manual release groaned under extreme tension, metal screeching against metal.

Inside the chamber, Clara stirred weakly, letting out a faint whimper: "Daddy... it hurts..."

Evelyn looked from the document on Hannah’s phone to the safe room, her mind completely shattered by the revelation that her entire five-year crusade of vengeance had been built on a foundation of monstrous betrayal by her own beloved father.

"No..." Evelyn whispered, her hands shaking so violently the heavy shotgun nearly slipped from her grasp. "No... Papa wouldn't..."
