Chapter 30 - The Message from the Depths

Forty-eight hours later.

The storm had passed, leaving behind a pale, overcast gray sky over the Bedford estate. Crime scene tape fluttered in the autumn wind around the charred, blackened ruins of the conservatory. Dive teams and search-and-rescue boats lined the banks of the Blackwood River, but after two days of dredging the churning rapids, no body had been recovered.

Inside the private pediatric wing of Saint Jude’s Memorial Hospital, the room was warm and peaceful.

Clara was sitting up in bed, color finally returned to her cheeks, happily eating a bowl of strawberries while Hannah gently brushed her soft brown hair. The bandage on Hannah’s forearm was clean, and for the first time in months, the lines of terror on Hannah's face seemed to have softened.

Daniel stood by the large bay window, a fresh cast wrapped tightly around his fractured ribs. He watched his daughter laugh as Hannah made a funny face with a stuffed animal.

It was finally over. The nightmare was done.

The district attorney had already initiated paperwork to review Eleanor Vale’s conviction in light of the new physical evidence and Hannah’s recovered documents. The legal labyrinth would take months to untangle, but Clara was safe. His family was alive.

There was a soft knock at the hospital door.

Daniel turned. Detective Vance stood in the doorway, his arm in a sling, his forehead stitched up from his miraculous survival when his cruiser was run off the road.

"Daniel," Vance said quietly, signaling him into the hallway. "A word."

Daniel stepped out into the quiet, sterile hospital corridor, pulling the door partially shut behind him. "Did they find her in the river?"

Detective Vance’s face was grim, devoid of any relief. He held a manila folder in his uninjured hand, his expression pale under the fluorescent hospital lights.

"No," Vance said, his voice dropped to a tense whisper. "The river currents washed out to the bay. If she hit the rocks at that height, it could take weeks to find anything."

"Then what is it, Vance? We have the confession. We have the ballistics from the tower."

Vance opened the manila folder and pulled out an official Department of Corrections notification bearing that morning’s date stamp.

"Daniel... two hours ago, I went down to the state correctional facility in Trenton to personally interview Eleanor Vale. To tell her that her twin sister had attacked your estate."

Daniel frowned, a cold prickle of unease brushing against the back of his neck. "And? Did she talk?"

"She couldn't," Vance said, his voice trembling slightly.

"What do you mean she couldn't?"

"The woman arrested at your gala... the woman booked as Eleanor Vale four weeks ago..." Vance looked directly into Daniel’s eyes, his hand visibly shaking as he handed over a coroner’s preliminary report. "She hanged herself in Cell 402 three days ago, Daniel. Before the attack on your estate even began."

Daniel froze. The hallway seemed to tilt violently beneath his feet. "That's... that's impossible. If Eleanor died three days ago in prison... then who was Evelyn trying to take revenge on?!"

"That’s not the worst part," Vance whispered, leaning in closer, his voice laced with pure dread. "The prison dental records came back an hour ago. The woman who died in Cell 402 wasn't Eleanor. And she wasn't Evelyn either."

"What are you saying?!" Daniel hissed, grabbing Vance’s lapel. "Who was in that cell?!"

"The DNA belongs to a woman named Sarah Jenkins—a private cosmetic surgery nurse from a clinic in Zurich," Vance whispered, his eyes wide with horror. "The real Eleanor Vale never went to prison, Daniel. And the woman who fell from your clocktower wasn't Evelyn."

Suddenly, Daniel’s smartphone in his pocket buzzed with an incoming text alert.

With shaking hands, Daniel pulled out the phone.

It was an unknown number. Attached to the message was a live video stream.

Daniel tapped the screen. The video opened to an exterior camera angle looking directly at the window of the pediatric hospital room where Clara and Hannah were laughing.
