Chapter 22 - The Twin from the Grave

"Move!" Daniel bellowed, throwing his entire weight against Hannah, tackling her behind a thick stone fountain just as the lighter met the solvent-drenched soil.
A deafening *WHOOSH* erupted, and a wall of bright crimson fire surged toward the glass ceiling. The heat was instantaneous and blistering, turning the humid conservatory into a raging furnace. Glass panels overhead began to crack and shatter under the sudden thermal shock, raining down lethal shards of hot crystal onto the burning floor.
"The side maintenance exit!" Hannah shouted over the roar of the blaze, pointing toward an iron service grate half-buried behind a burning cluster of palms. "Under the irrigation pipes!"
Daniel didn't hesitate. He grabbed the heavy iron trowel Hannah had dropped, wedged it into the rusted padlock of the maintenance grate, and pulled with every ounce of strength he possessed. The lock snapped with a violent crack. He shoved Hannah into the narrow, dark tunnel first, then threw himself inside just as the entire glass dome above collapsed in an apocalyptic storm of flame and shattering glass.
They tumbled down into the damp, cold brickwork of the underground service tunnels. Daniel hit the concrete floor hard, his shoulder screaming in pain, but he scrambled to his feet instantly.
"Are you hit?" he asked, his hands shaking as he checked Hannah for injuries.
"I'm fine... Daniel, look," Hannah whispered, shining her flashlight beam along the brick wall.
The tunnel was dry, untouched by the fire above, but it wasn't empty. Nailed to the century-old brick walls were dozens of black-and-white photographs. Daniel stepped forward, his heart freezing in his chest.
They were photographs of his family. But not recent ones. There were photos of Eleanor from fifteen years ago—and beside her stood an identical girl. Both wore identical boarding school uniforms, their auburn hair braided identically. But in every photograph, the girl on the left had her face viciously scratched out with a razor blade.
Scattered on a makeshift wooden workbench beneath the photos were medical records bearing the faded blue seal of *Saint Jude’s Psychiatric Institute for the Criminally Insane*.
Daniel picked up the top file with trembling hands. His eyes scanned the yellowed document:
*Patient Name: Evelyn Vale.*
*Status: Twin sister of Eleanor Vale.*
*Diagnosis: Extreme psychopathy, severe narcissistic sociopathy with violent predatory delusions.*
*Case Note (Dated Oct 14, 2018): Patient pronounced deceased following catastrophic fire in Cell Block C. Body cremated per family request.*
Below the death certificate was a handwritten note scrawled in fresh, wet red lipstick:
*“Eleanor took your money, Daniel. But she took my face, my life, and my freedom. Now I take everything that belongs to both of you.”*
"She didn't die in the hospital fire," Hannah whispered, her hand covering her mouth in horror. "Evelyn survived. Eleanor took her identity, married you, and put Evelyn in a grave... but Evelyn clawed her way back."
"That means the woman in cell 402 right now..." Daniel looked at Hannah, his eyes hollow with a terrifying revelation. "Who did the police actually arrest at the gala?"
Before Hannah could answer, the mansion's central intercom system, wired through the underground tunnels, crackled to life with a screech of static.
A little girl's voice echoed through the cold pipes: *"Ring around the rosy, pocket full of posies... ashes, ashes... we all fall down."*

Then, Evelyn’s chilling voice whispered through the speaker: *"Ten minutes, Daniel. The safe room in the clocktower has an air filtration system. Or it did, until I reversed the pump. Come get your daughter... before she falls asleep forever."*
