Chapter 32 - The Zurich Ledger

The sub-level parking garage smelled of damp concrete, gasoline, and ozone. Rain poured in through the vehicle ramp, splashing against the armor-plated black SUV idling in the shadows.
Clara strapped Hannah into the armored child seat in the back, whispering soothing lullabies while the four-year-old clutched her teddy bear, her eyelashes wet with exhausted tears.
Vance slammed the rear door shut and pulled out a rugged military tablet. His hands were covered in grime. "I managed to rip the encrypted drive from the hospital’s security server before we disconnected the main feed. The facial recognition at the perimeter caught the sniper."
Daniel leaned over Vance’s shoulder, his jaw clenched so hard his molars ached. "Show me."
The screen flickered. A grainy thermal image showed a figure in a black trench coat descending from the construction crane across from St. Jude’s Hospital. The figure removed a balaclava, turning briefly toward the city camera at 54th Street.
Daniel choked back a breath.
The face was flawless. High cheekbones, piercing emerald eyes, a delicate jawline. It was Eleanor Vale.
"How is this possible?" Daniel hissed, his voice trembling with a mixture of fury and disbelief. "Eleanor Vale was stripped of her assets! We watched her get booked! We have the court orders, the psychiatric evaluations—"
"Look closer at the earlobe," Vance interrupted, zooming the 4K feed until the pixels broke down. "The scar tissue behind the tragus. It’s a surgical flap. And look at the Zurich coroner's file on Sarah Jenkins."
Vance pulled up a side-by-side autopsy report from Switzerland.
"Sarah Jenkins wasn't just a surgical nurse," Vance whispered, the horror dripping from every syllable. "She was the lead technician at the Saint-Maurice Aesthetic Institute in Geneva. A private clinic that specializes in radical craniofacial reconstruction for high-net-worth fugitives and intelligence operatives. The woman who died in the prison cell wasn't Eleanor. She was a surrogate, sculpted to match Eleanor’s facial structure down to the millimeter."
"And the woman who jumped from my clocktower?" Daniel demanded, staring into the dark rain outside the tinted SUV window.
"Her twin sister, Evelyn, had the same surgery to enhance the resemblance," Vance said, turning the tablet to show a financial spreadsheet. "Daniel... there wasn't just one sister, and there wasn't just two. The Zurich ledger shows six separate multi-million-dollar wire transfers from an offshore trust fund called *The Lilith Syndicate*. Each payment was earmarked for the exact same procedure."

Daniel felt the ground dissolve beneath him. "Six?"
"There are six women walking the earth right now with the face of Eleanor Vale," Vance said, his voice a ghost. "They didn't just come for your money, Daniel. They came to replace your entire world."
