Chapter 5 - The War of the Elites

At 8:00 AM, the Manhattan financial district awoke to absolute chaos.
Vale Global Logistics’ shares plummeted fourteen percent in pre-market trading as the garden fountain footage dominated every morning television broadcast from CNN to the BBC. Outside the Vale Penthouse and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, satellite trucks lined the curbs, their telephoto lenses trained on every exiting vehicle.
Inside the executive boardroom on the sixty-fifth floor of the Vale Tower, Daniel Vale stood before the floor-to-ceiling glass, his face as hard as polished slate. He had showered in the executive suite, traded his ruined tuxedo for a bespoke navy suit, and shaved with cold water. His eyes were bloodshot, but the agonizing despair of the night had crystallized into a lethal, surgical resolve.
The double doors of the boardroom swung open without a knock.
Arthur Sterling, senior partner at Sterling, Vance & Montgomery—one of Wall Street’s most ruthless white-collar defense firms—walked into the room. He was followed by his entourage: two junior partners clutching bulging briefcases, and Evelyn’s mother, Victoria Montgomery, a matriarch whose family had held old-money power in New York since the Gilded Age.
Victoria walked with a silver-tipped cane, her silver hair styled in a severe chignon, her face an unyielding mask of blue-blooded arrogance. She didn't look at the panoramic view of the harbor; she looked directly at Daniel with utter contempt.
"Have you completely lost your mind, Daniel?" Victoria demanded, her voice cutting through the quiet hum of the HVAC system like a whip. "You allowed our family name to be dragged through the gutter of public sensationalism over a domestic accident? Evelyn is currently being held in a holding cell at the Manhattan Detention Complex like a common street criminal!"
Daniel didn't turn around immediately. He watched a container ship glide slowly past the Statue of Liberty far below. "She isn't a common street criminal, Victoria. A common criminal usually has a motive born of desperation or poverty. Your daughter is a calculated, sadistic monster who attempted to murder a four-year-old child."
"Be very careful with your slander, Daniel," Arthur Sterling interjected, stepping forward, his polished Italian leather shoes squeaking softly on the hardwood. "We have already secured three affidavits from pediatric neurologists stating that Clara has a history of inner-ear imbalances. The fall was an unfortunate, involuntary reflex. Evelyn was attempting to balance herself after Clara violently kicked her."
Daniel slowly turned around. He looked at Sterling, then at Victoria. The cold smile that touched his lips made Sterling’s practiced smile falter.
"Is that the narrative you’re going with, Arthur?" Daniel asked softly. He walked toward the massive conference table, picked up a sleek wireless remote, and clicked it toward the eighty-inch display on the wall.
The screen lit up.
It wasn't Camille Price’s phone footage. It was high-definition, infrared surveillance video pulled directly from Evelyn’s private *SentriCam* cloud storage, seized by the NYPD five hours ago.
The screen showed Clara, curled into a ball on the floor of the dark cedar closet, sobbing silently, clutching her stomach. The date stamp was four days prior. The audio was crystal clear.
The door opened, letting in a shaft of light. Evelyn stood in the doorway, wearing an evening gown, holding a glass of Pinot Noir.
*"Stop crying, you pathetic little leech,"* Evelyn’s recorded voice echoed through the high-ceilinged boardroom. *"Your father doesn't care about you. He hasn't called once. He’s in London closing a ninety-million-dollar buyout, and he didn't even ask if you were alive. The moment you are gone, I become the sole trustee. Do you know what that means, Clara? It means no one will ever remember you were here."*
Victoria Montgomery’s face drained of color. The matriarch gripped her silver cane with both hands, her knuckles whitening until they looked like ivory.
Arthur Sterling froze, his mouth slightly open, his legal mind frantically attempting to calculate the catastrophic implications of the evidence.
"This... this is an illegal recording," Sterling sputtered, though the sweat suddenly glistening on his forehead betrayed his panic. "This was obtained without a warrant, without consent—"
"The NYPD executed a Class-A search warrant authorized by a federal magistrate at 3:15 AM," Daniel said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly calm. "It’s already in the hands of the District Attorney. And that’s not all, Victoria."
Daniel tapped the remote again. A series of financial spreadsheets flickered onto the screen.
"For the past fourteen months, Evelyn has been systematically siphoning funds from the Montgomery Family Charitable Foundation into shell corporations registered in Belize and the Marshall Islands," Daniel explained, advancing the slides one by one. "She wasn't just planning to inherit Clara’s trust. She was planning to loot your family’s entire liquidity before your brother’s bankruptcy petition hit the federal docket next month. She was setting you up to take the fall for eighty million dollars in wire fraud."
Victoria gasped, her hand flying to her chest. "That's... that's impossible. Evelyn would never—"
"Evelyn would kill a child for a seat on an offshore trust, Victoria," Daniel interrupted, stepping directly into the old woman’s personal space until she was forced to lean back against the table. "You thought you came here to intimidate me? You thought the Montgomery name still held power in this city?"
Daniel leaned down, his voice a low, venomous whisper that made Arthur Sterling instinctively take a step backward.
"I have already instructed my legal team to initiate immediate divorce proceedings on grounds of attempted murder and extreme cruelty. I have revoked your family firm's retainer with Vale Global. By noon, every bank holding Montgomery debt will receive a formal notice that Vale Global will no longer underwrite your commercial paper. You aren't just going to lose Evelyn to a maximum-security prison, Victoria."
Daniel paused, his eyes drilling into the trembling matriarch.

"You are going to lose everything you own. Now get the hell out of my office before I have security throw you onto the pavement."
