Chapter 40 - The Trapdoor Beneath the Altar

The ballroom plunged into absolute, dead silence. Even the shutter-clicks of the press cameras hesitated.

Eleanor's perfect, porcelain face finally shattered. A twitch of genuine, raw panic flickered in her emerald eyes. "What are you talking about?"

"Hannah has your DNA," Daniel said, taking a slow step up the marble stairs. "And she has mine. But the reason our genetic markers aligned so flawlessly... the reason your 'sisters' looked so identical to the ancestral portraits in the Sterling gallery..."

Daniel leaned in close, his voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that was picked up by the sensitive stage microphone:

"You aren't my late wife, Eleanor. And you aren't an orphan from Zurich."

Daniel gestured to the Federal marshals. The lead agent pressed a button on a remote drive, and the massive projector screen behind the floral arch lit up with a certified state birth registry from forty years ago.

"You are Jonathan Sterling’s illegitimate daughter. The sister my father hid away in the Blackwood asylum to protect his public name."

Gasps rippled through the two hundred elite guests. Socialites covered their mouths in horror.

"Hannah is not just my daughter," Daniel whispered, his eyes boring into Eleanor's soul. "She is the product of a genetic vault you thought you were exploiting—while you were walking straight into the bloodline trap my father laid before he died."

Eleanor’s face drained of all color. Her breath came in short, panicked gasps. "No... no, the trust... the money is mine! The legal guardianship—"

"A sibling cannot legally inherit an irrevocable direct-line trust under the Sterling charter if paternity fraud is proven," Vance shouted from the back of the room, holding up an official arrest warrant signed by the Chief Justice. "It’s over, Eleanor. Step away from the child."

Eleanor looked around wildly. The exits were sealed by federal agents. The cameras were broadcasting her ruined facade to forty million households worldwide. Her empire of mirrors had cracked into a thousand jagged pieces.

Then, Eleanor looked down at Hannah.

A terrifying, chilling laugh escaped her lips. It started as a chuckle, then rose into a wild, maniacal cackle that echoed off the high vaulted ceilings of the ballroom.

"Did you really think it was about the money, brother?" Eleanor hissed, her eyes blazing with absolute madness.

Before Daniel could leap across the stage, Eleanor reached beneath the floral altar and yanked a concealed heavy brass lever.

*CLANG!*

The marble floor beneath Hannah’s velvet sofa split wide open.

"DADDY!" Hannah shrieked as the entire section of the stage plummeted downward into the dark, cavernous depths of the abandoned railway tunnels running beneath the ballroom.

"HANNAH!" Daniel roared, throwing himself forward into the gaping abyss.

As Daniel’s fingers brushed the hem of Hannah's blanket, Eleanor stepped backward over the edge with a triumphant scream, falling into the roaring blackness below—and from the darkness below the floorboards, the countdown timer of an explosive device began to beep:

*00:05... 00:04... 00:03...*
