Chapter 38 - The Auction of Stolen Lives

The rain turned to sleet, battering the glass towers of Manhattan as the black SUV tore through the midnight grid.

Vance was on the encrypted radio with the Governor’s office, but the answers coming back were an escalating nightmare.

"It's true," Vance said, throwing his headset against the dashboard. "The Swiss consulate just validated an international decree of custody. A woman claiming to be Elizabeth-Eleanor Sterling presented the birth certificates, the original umbilical cord DNA profiles from Mount Sinai, and the irrevocable trust Daniel signed after the fountain incident."

"The fountain..." Clara breathed, the realization washing over her face like ice water. "The gala. The day she threw Hannah into the fountain in front of two hundred guests!"

Daniel gripped the steering wheel, his knuckles white, blood dripping onto the leather from his cuts. "It was never about hurting Hannah. It was theater."

"It was high-stakes legal manipulation," Clara whispered. "She threw the child into the water so the entire world would brand her as an abusive monster. She manipulated you into taking extreme legal precautions—locking her out, moving all your liquid assets into an unassailable trust exclusively tied to Hannah's name, managed by an independent guardian in the event of your death or incapacity!"

"And now," Vance finished, his face grim, "if Daniel dies, or if Daniel is declared mentally unfit due to 'violent paranoia,' the entire multi-billion-dollar empire defaults instantly to the biological mother. Who just legally resurrected herself."

"Where is she?" Daniel demanded, his voice dropping into an icy, lethal calm. "She didn't leave the country. Not with the airspace locked down after the hospital shooting."

"The Grand Cascade Ballroom," Vance said, pulling up an encrypted calendar ping retrieved from the dead guard’s satellite comms. "The annual Solstice Charity Gala. The same ballroom where you two were supposed to celebrate your anniversary tonight."

Daniel’s eyes narrowed into twin daggers of ice. "She went back to the lion's den."

"Not just the den," Clara said, checking the tactical feeds. "She invited every billionaire, every senator, and every Supreme Court justice in the state. She's standing in front of the world's cameras right now, Daniel. With Hannah in her arms. Presenting herself as the triumphant mother rescued from your 'abusive captivity.' If you walk in there with a gun, you will be cut down by the Secret Service before you clear the foyer."

"Then I won't walk in as an attacker," Daniel said, reaching into the compartment beneath his seat and pulling out a heavy, wax-sealed manila envelope his father had left him in the family crypt. "I will walk in as the executioner of her empire."
