Chapter 8 - The Press Conference from Hell

The granite steps of the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse on Centre Street were swarming with more than three hundred journalists, television camera crews, and curious onlookers held back by steel barricades and a dozen mounted police officers.
The morning rain had stopped, replaced by a thick, oppressive humidity. At 8:45 AM, a black Mercedes Maybach pulled up to the curb. Arthur Sterling stepped out, immaculate in a pinstripe three-piece suit, his silver hair catching the morning light.
He held his hand out, helping Evelyn Montgomery emerge from the vehicle.
She was dressed entirely in ivory white—a bespoke cashmere coat, no jewelry save for a delicate gold cross around her neck, and her auburn hair pulled back into an elegant, modest ponytail. Her face was completely free of makeup, pale and scrubbed clean, designed to project the image of a fragile, heartbroken saint who had been unjustly accused by a callous world.
As the cameras erupted into a blinding storm of flashes, Sterling escorted Evelyn toward a cluster of twenty microphones set up on the middle landing.
"Ladies and gentlemen of the press," Sterling began, raising both hands to quiet the cacophony of shouted questions. "My client, Mrs. Evelyn Montgomery Vale, has been subjected to a malicious, coordinated character assassination orchestrated by the corporate rivals of Vale Global Logistics. The tragic incident at yesterday’s charity gala was nothing more than a heartbreaking domestic accident. Clara Vale, a child Mrs. Montgomery loves as her own flesh and blood, suffered a documented medical episode—"
"A seizure, Arthur?"
The voice cut through the courtyard with the force of an artillery shell.
The press corps parted like the Red Sea.
Daniel Vale walked through the center of the crowd. He was flanked not by bodyguards, but by Hannah Reed and Detective Marcus Vance. Daniel was carrying an industrial-grade portable PA amplifier in one hand and a wireless digital media transmitter in the other.
Evelyn’s composed, pious expression cracked for a fraction of a second, a flash of pure panic darting across her eyes.
"Mr. Vale, this is an improper interference with a legal proceeding!" Sterling yelled into the microphones, his voice cracking with sudden desperation. "Officers, remove this man!"
The police officers didn't move. Detective Vance flashed his gold shield at the courthouse detail, shaking his head once.
Daniel set the heavy amplifier down on the granite steps, ten feet below the microphones, and plugged the transmitter into his phone.
"You want to tell the world about the accident, Evelyn?" Daniel asked, his voice echoing from the amplifier, booming across the entire plaza and silencing the crowd instantly. "Let’s let the world hear you describe it in your own words."
Daniel tapped the screen.
The audio recording of Evelyn and Sterling discussing the murder conspiracy exploded from the speakers.
*"The garden party is the optimal venue, Arthur. Two hundred witnesses will see her fall... Chlorine in her lungs combined with the clonazepam... The Montgomery family takes over the trust... And I get my freedom from that miserable little brat."*
The silence that fell over the plaza was absolute, suffocating, and total.
Three hundred journalists stood with their mouths open. The live-stream camera operators frantically adjusted their audio feeds, realizing they were broadcasting an unedited, indisputable murder conspiracy confession to tens of millions of viewers across the globe.
Evelyn’s face turned from pristine white to an ugly, mottled gray. She grabbed Sterling’s arm, her fingers digging through his tailored wool. "Arthur... shut it off! Shut it off now!"
"There's more," Daniel said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he climbed the steps, closing the distance between them.
He turned his phone toward the massive digital news truck parked across the street, which was linked to the courthouse feed. With another tap, the screens across the plaza flickered to life.
Images of the Blue Room flashed before the public. The tallies scratched into the baseboard: **DADDY COME**. The hundreds of child’s handprints clawing at the windowless cedar closet door. The forged prescription bottles. And finally, the forensic photographs of the finger-shaped bruises covering Clara’s collarbone.
A collective gasp of pure horror rippled through the gathered crowd. Then came the roar.
"Monster!" a woman screamed from behind the barricades.
"Murderer! Lock her up!" shouted another, as the crowd began to surge against the steel barriers, forcing the mounted police to struggle to maintain order.
Arthur Sterling backed away from Evelyn as if she were radioactive, holding his hands up to distance himself from the woman he had defended only moments before. "I... I had no knowledge of this evidence. I withdraw as counsel of record. Immediately."
"Arthur! You coward!" Evelyn shrieked, her aristocratic mask completely disintegrating. She lunged toward him, but her heel caught the edge of her cashmere coat, and she tumbled down three granite steps, landing hard on her hands and knees in front of Daniel’s shoes.
She looked up, her auburn hair falling across her face, her eyes wild, cornered, and rabid with hatred.
"You think you’ve won, Daniel?" she hissed, her voice loud enough for the nearest microphones to catch every venomous syllable. "That little girl is a weak, pathetic parasite, just like her dead mother! She was never going to hold your empire! I should have dropped her on the marble terrace instead of the water!"
Daniel looked down at her. There was no rage left in his eyes—only an overwhelming, profound disgust.
"You're right about one thing, Evelyn," Daniel said quietly. "You won't have to see her hold the empire. Because from where you're going, you won't even see the sky."
Detective Vance stepped forward, flanked by two federal marshals. He pulled Evelyn’s hands behind her back with unyielding force and clicked the heavy steel cuffs around her wrists.
"Evelyn Montgomery," Vance intoned into the microphones, his voice carrying over the roaring crowd. "You are under arrest for Attempted Murder in the First Degree, Aggravated Child Abuse, and Federal Wire Fraud. You have the right to remain silent."

As the marshals dragged the screaming, cursing woman down the steps toward the waiting transport van, the flashes of three hundred cameras lit up her face, immortalizing her fall for the entire world to see.
