Chapter 34 - The Daughter He Never Knew

The Sterling Medical Vault lay four stories beneath an unassuming brutalist skyscraper on Wall Street. Behind blast doors forged from hardened titanium, Dr. Aris Thorne—an elderly man with silver hair and razor-sharp intellect—slid the antidote into Hannah’s central venous line.
The girl’s ragged breathing slowed. The black spiderweb on her arm faded to a dull, bruised grey.
"She will survive, Daniel," Dr. Thorne said, adjusting his spectacles as he monitored the digital vitals. "It was a synthetic variant of tetrodotoxin mixed with an anticoagulant. Another twenty minutes, and her respiratory diaphragm would have permanently paralyzed."
Daniel stood over the bed, not letting go of Hannah’s tiny, limp hand. Clara stood beside him, her arm wrapped around his waist, offering the only anchor keeping him from descending into blind madness.
"Thorne," Daniel said without looking up. "Did you run the blood toxicity panel like I asked?"
"I did," the old doctor sighed, hesitating. He glanced at Clara, then at Detective Vance, who was pacing near the secure blast door. "And I found something else, Daniel. Something that makes no clinical or genetic sense."
Daniel turned, his eyes narrowing into cold slits. "Speak."
Dr. Thorne tapped a keystroke on his console, bringing up two strands of DNA displayed in luminous green helices.
"When I ran Hannah’s blood to isolate the neurotoxin, the automated system cross-referenced her markers against the Sterling Family Genetic Registry," Thorne explained, his voice thick with unease. "Hannah is your daughter, undeniably. But the maternal DNA markers... they do not match your late wife, Elizabeth."
Daniel froze. The room seemed to plunge into absolute zero.
"What did you just say?" Daniel whispered. "Elizabeth gave birth to Hannah at Mount Sinai. I was in the room! I cut the cord with my own hands!"
"Then you were handed a child that was not Elizabeth's," Thorne stated with absolute clinical certainty. "The biological mother of Hannah Sterling shares a ninety-nine point eight percent genetic match with... the woman you know as Eleanor Vale."
Clara gasped, clapping both hands over her mouth. Vance stopped pacing, his eyes wide with utter shock.

"That's a lie," Daniel snarled, stepping toward the doctor, the veins in his neck bulging. "Eleanor was a stranger! I met her at a charity auction two years after Elizabeth died! She threw Hannah into a fountain because she hated her! She tried to drown her!"
"Or," Vance said quietly from the doorway, his voice chilling the room to the bone, "she threw Hannah into that fountain because she knew you would dive in after her. Because the child was never meant to be Elizabeth’s legacy, Daniel... she was bred to be the ultimate weapon against you."
